I'm no expert, but now we have stripped off the cylinder head today to have a look, its not looking so clever for getting to Le Mans

not sure what you mean, the valve seat pockets for the inlet valves, they are cast into the piston

Ah, my mistake then. I thought they were caused by valve meeting piston.

He's an N/A boy, their pistons don't have seat pockets so I'm guessing that's where the confusion is coming from. So is that a rebore and some new rings then Steve?

symptoms: pressurising coolant expansion tank, sometimes exhaust steam on first start I think its a HGF on cyl #3 on the inlet valve side (there is a more marmalade colour look to the water jacket) , although there is no sign of any oil / water mix up.

I still have access to that brand new engine if you fancy a straight swap.

T-cut will remove that. thumbsup I assume that's just a dried trickle of rusty water in cylinder 3 and not some nasty crack in the wall? I guess it's a case of remove the the piston, rehone the cylinder and refit piston with new rings. Light skim of the head and new head gasket and away you go.

None of the oil ways to water way seals look bad tbh, the seals between cyclinder and water ways look mostly good. hard to tell whether its cyl3 or not. that trickle down the bore is probably a prettty good indication but you would usually see a mark in the seal. either way a clean up and a new HG will sort you out.

Doesn't look that bad to be honest, I'd reskim and rebuild - the rust marks will be removed as soon as the engine starts running

Honestly I think this one could even go without a new piston/rehone too Check the head, reskim if needed, new HGF and go !

I'd check carefully that the rusy water was deffo coming from HGF and not porosity/micro crack at the top of the cylinder bore. If it was the former, I'd just clean it up and put the head back on with a new HG and see if the problem has gone.

The coolant system is 13 L in total, so might want to grab another 5L of deionised water

i did a search , but only found 2.2 threads , and the capacity seemed to vary. I'm going to try and give it two flushes through as it looks like canal water at the moment. the water pump has been replaced with new, the old bearings had play (I think this was my angry menacing mechanical noise at high rpm) and it was leaking past the outer seal. I've fitted a new thermostat housing , new water block housing ( with temp sensor ) as it seemed that the ally was okay, but the metal pipe for the hoses had rust. All new gaskets for everything, ran a tap through all the threads and cleaned up all the surfaces with a razor blade first, then gave them a good going over with an india stone. the cylinder head has been tested for flatness on my engineers table and restored back to factory fresh and a lot of work with the india stone

cleaned up and inspected the old turbo, decided against putting the high power new turbo on

Posted Image

for ease of reinstallation, we built the turbo up to the head, rather than try and do this in the engine bay
Posted Image

this is where we are at right now, head gasket on, head bolts in, but I need to pop out and get a 1/2 to 3/8 adaptor for the small torque wrench
