When a MAF is in the circuit the ECU is able to reduce fueling in certain cicumstances, by virtue of the fact that the ECU has extra info about the amount of air and temp/density of the air entering the system. Thus if you eliminate the MAF, you will in all likelyhood increase fuel consumption marginally (maybe 2 to 4 MPG for an average 2.0 Ltr engine). Having said this, I would prefer a MAFless system as it is 1 less point of failure in the system.
