Put the sub behind the sofa away from next door. It's not supposed to be directional but they are.

I'd say the baton and glass route is easier. That said we just plaster boarded the conservatory with insulated board and we can barely hear outside stuff now.

If you need a hand I might be able to help :)

Solution 3 looks better with a claim of -30db

Orr http://www.wickes.co...mm/invt/224657/

Stu you're a true gentleman, help is always appreciated but I realise we're both busy.

The wickes link was for soundshield board 2400x1200, is that what you mean by option 3?

Looks good to me and would certainly be a pretty cheap way of doing things. Certainly if combined with battens and insulation of some kind I can't see much being better and more cost effective than that.

Option 3 from the link you posted. if you look on the compare page solution 3 claims a -30db drop for a 'medium' cost compared to the solution 4 being 'high'

battening and boarding would take about a day (if that) with two people on it as the boards are twatting heavy, so shouldnt eat into time too much :) Then you get the long ass task of finishing it

Ah right I was being thick sorry! Pretty certain I'm going to do this now. Exciting. Really want to wire in speaker plates and a 5.1 plate behind the TV. Soooo geeky.

I thought about wire plates and all that, but in the end just burried cables in the walls and had them poking out top and bottom

My neighbor leaves her dog all weekend about once a month. This means me and Lizzie get NO sleep. I was thinking about a getting a gun and just shooting the pair of them. I have even sponken to her about it, she said my dad comes and looks on the dogs. RSPCA has been called... Bark bark bark

Yep... but I'd be interested in what they charge for that - as I reckon that it could be made for less than a tenner diy.

£29.99 for a banana plug one, £44.99 for a binding post one. Can get a white plastic one for £16.99 I think you'd struggle to DIY one for a tenner. I love the idea of having proper speaker plates, and if you're going to do that makes sense to have a plate to plug the amp to, but I do wonder where you would put the plate that would be near the amp, but nowhere near any of your five speakers? I imagine the vast majority of people would have the centre and likely one front near the amp.

3 of these... £6.96 (http://www.rapidonli...source=googleps)
Peice of Hardboard £1.50
Can of Silver Spray Paint £3.00

Not far of a tenner

Or for fancier parts http://www.rapidonli...udio-Connectors

Silver sprayed hardboard?! No no no, that's cheating. And would look horrible. I want banana plugs and a proper backing for less than a tenner. Whilst I think that they're reasonably priced, have realised that the individual banana plates for each speaker will push up the overall cost considerably.

Perhaps, but trying to run speaker cable around a lot of furniture, doors, windows in certain rooms can be just as much of a pain in the arse to do.

I think it's the extra cost of another 10 sets of banana plugs that may put me off.

Have you got scope to move the lounge to a none party wall? It will be quite easy to filter out your mid range but a useful amount of sub bass will be virtually impossible to stop transmitting through to a neighbouring room. The thing with bass is with the resonance it can actually be louder in the next room than where you are listening to it. Careful positioning should help a little with that but you can't really just stick a sub in a convenient spot and hope for the best.

No, it's impossible, has to be the party wall.

I realise that I won't be able to make it perfect but I'm going for damage limitation.

How about you get a shed load of these and space them out at 12cm centres inside your newly battened wall? should cover even the low frequency sub :D

My party wall neighbour is abouttobuil an open plan extension so we have spoken about sound insulation. Be very interested to see your results. Your link looks similar to this http://www.soundservice.co.uk/M20.html Claims a 48db reduction and not too thick. This one looks interesting too, 45 db. http://www.acoustic-...cw-silent-board

Thread resurrection time...

After a long and careful amount of research done to the sounds of next door's gangsta rap music, and looking at all possible options, and weighing up the pros and cons of each, I have decided to go with the cheapest one.

So battens, heavy density insulation, sound boards, acoustic mastic.

At the end of the day anything is going to be an improvement, and I think it'll be an exponential situation - beyond doing this, any improvements are going to be minimal for the cost.

Have started purchasing bits and pieces for routing speaker cable. Much as I love the 7.1 plate, in reality my amp and front three speakers are all going to be within about 3m of each other, so there would be no point.
Have decided to go for two plates at the back for rear speakers, and a double plate behind the amp.

Have picked up enough speaker cable to biamp the front three, and using my old front cable to run through the walls for the rears.

Next need to figure out how I'm going to route everything through to the kitchen diner, and gets everything in place for that...
