With all this turbo talk and the other recent thread... Can people explain the differences including price between the ones below.   K06 or K04 or TurboDynamics or Garrett

Iv had K03, K04, K06 and now Garrett. They all make power a little later on but more of it. I have found the Garrett to have the same lag as the K04, except it makes more power and for alot longer because it is more efficient. However, the Garrett is by far the most expensive to implement. During a recent rolling road session my boost controler was having to intervine because it was hitting 28psi at 3500 rpm with no signs of tailing off. It was holding that all the way to the 7000rpm red line which a KKK could never do. Depends what you want and how deep your pockets are.

I had a K03 on when the rest of the car was at CMS stage 4+ levels and asked them to squeeze everything out of the turbo for shits and giggles. It had the power delivery and band of diesel. Huge torque very early on, but it was out of puff by 4.5k and couldnt make more than 250bhp if I remember correctly.

In going to stage 4 I am looking for a turbo and a map that will give as N/A like feel as possible (of course you can't replicate N/A) but I want it to be as smooth as possible with as little lag as possible. I am not so bothered in getting absolute power out of it, I will happily sacrifice some bhp for linearity. @sizten what is the turbodynamics like?

A lot of that will be down to good mapping.

then you want a standard vxr k04 if you want 280-300bhp or a gt2876r if you want to splash out and go for a bit more power, but then your going to need some new rods

the lag is part of the map , if you disable the boost control and watch the boost meter it does give 32psi almost instantly

Probably, but I'm balls deep into my tubby so am too far committed to make the switch :D also the N/A doesnt have central locking and I'm really rather fond of that ;)

Depends how much you want to spend.... K04 - bolts on, 300bhp limit Garrett - now your into new manifolds / down pipes / air intakes / waist gates / 630cc injectors, ect & thats before engine internals, throttle bodys ect!!!! costs spiral very quickly!!!! tho the limit is whatever you want it to be!!!!

From what I read there and in other forums, here are some elements on the different options: - K04: OEM turbocharger of Z20LET, maximum possible at around 250HP - K04 RS: turbocharger from Z20LEH, max @300HP - K04 "hybrid" : K04 unit reworked with stronger bearings, different compressor (K06). Can be done either by AET or Turbo Dynamics. CS propose Turbo Dynamics on their website. From what is indicated by VX Performance website, can reach 330HP (with EDS or Klasen inlet manifold) http://www.vx-perfor...products_id=124 - Garrett: You have a whole range available, from the small GT28RS (max 350HP) to the bigger boys as seen for example in Nev's beast Nev posted some times ago interesting dynoplots, with K04 RS compared to several Garrett units. From what you could see, K04 was spooling sooner, but also unable to maintain boost at high RPMs compared to Garretts.

On the Courtneays site it says a number of options. Can anyone shed any light rather than parts numbers and part names. To a luddite like me it means nothing, I'd like to know what the options actually does or give you, that would be a big help thumbsup... Can be supplied with: OPTION 1: Adjust OE Standard Actuator to suit a Standard mapped Z20LET car. OPTION 2: Valvoline Fully Synthetic 5w-40 (API:SM specification) Oil (5 Litres), GM Longlife Oil Filter and sump washer. OPTION 3: Exhaust Manifold to Head Gasket, Turbo Oil Drain Gasket. Oil Breather Tube to Block Gaskets AND Oil and Water Feed and Return Copper Washers OPTION 4 - Hybrid Options: Stage 1 - Upgraded 360 degree thrust bearing, more durable twin oil seals and rebalancing Stage 1.5 - Upgraded 360 degree thrust bearing, more durable twin oil seals, exhaust wheel cut back and rebalancing Stage 2 - K06 Billet Compressor Wheel, 360 degree thrust bearing, more durable twin oil seals, cut back exhaust wheel and rebalancing Important: The K06 option will require suitable remapping to ensure turbo and/or engine damage does not occur.

At the time I was thinking of going for a k06 but decided to go for the vxr option as there service didn't seem great http://www.vx220.org...5288-aet-turbo/

Aimy, you are talking about AET, yet I understood there are other companies that offer K06 version. Courtenay works with Turbo Technics (as mentioned in the thread you referred to). DW1, can you be more precise regarding what you don't understand in your list?

Hi Glambee, I don't understand which option will be best for me and what I would be giving up by not going for the top of the range. I need it to be reliable. Clearly they go up in price so in theory the more expensive the better. What I want is a stage 4 that gives me 290ish bhp and 300+lbs, most importantly drivability with a linear response so that it can be adjustable mid bend, absolute minimal lag, plus a long band of power delivery. Not sure if that is 100% the map or if there are hardware elements that are a factor in the way the car responds.
I.e. what does a 360 degree thrust bearing bring me in terms of driving experience, is it none but makes it more reliable or does it means it spools up more quickly etc?
Will going for any of the more expensive options mean that it is more delicate?
I hope this helps explain. I am about to spend a shed load and want to get it right first time. I don't plan to go beyond stage 4 for or muck about with engine internals etc.

Ok, so Upgraded 360 degree thrust bearing, more durable twin oil seals and rebalancing will add reliability to your turbocharger for sure. K06 compressor will add power in high RPMs compared to standard compressor. Regarding lag, the bigger the turbocharger, the more lag you will have. K04 is a small unit, that explains why it cannot hold boost at high RPMs, yet it is not a laggy one. If you are looking after 290BHP, stage 1 K04 will be enough. As for drivability, this will be the talent of your engine ECU tuner that will do the difference... You can ask for a flat curve of torque mid range to have a more linear power curve.
