Hi all, I'm after ome advice really, i have about 4 or 5 small chips in my windscreen for motorway miles. one of the chips is less than 3cm from the side of the surround so they say they'll have to replace as their tool wont fit to fix the chip. However i just spent £10 on a nice windscreen wrap and i dont want a silver windscreen surround! What's the best thing to say to get hold of a black one? just tell them it's a VXR? Any ideas? ps £75 for a new screen with my insurance windscreen excess.

Just ask for the black one. They're quite happy to fit either

There is a thread of my experiences somewhere. I had mine done last month. £75 through Autoglass, they just booked it in as an Exige and therefore fitted a black surround screen. Super easy to do and no questions or hesitations.

Hi thanks for all of the replies. I rang Autoglass directly to get the free Bosch wiper deal but unfortunately my insurance use their own windscreen company and i have to do it through them! i'll ask for the black surround / exige surround and see how i get on! Andy.

Mmm interesting when I asked Autoglass about replacing my screen they told me I would have to take it to a garage and have the front clam moved forward. Then call them to get the screen changed. Did you have this problem or did Autoglass move the clam.

Kind regards, Paul

Auto glass should remove the clam or whoever they reccomened to do it. If they cant then speak to your insurer then you'll have to take it somewhere that can as log as your insurance know. Then they'll pay for it.

I think Wolfy and Coco had theirs done by a place well known for VX work and clam was loosened and moved to get the new screen in. Very good work by all accounts

Mine was done at Autoglass in Chelmsford. Loosened off a couple of front clam bolts and that was it, left it to cure. I asked beforehand if he'd had experience of our cars before so that gave me some confidence when he said he had.

Yep. Autoglass in Northampton did mine. Loosened a couple of clam bolts just so it moved forward a bit. They knew exactly what they were doing and had done plenty of VXs before. They were also more than happy to get me a black screen if Id wanted.

I had mine done by autoglass they wanted the car in for the day as they would loosen the clam to fit the screen , real pig of a job they said. So I told them to come and replace it at my place as the clam was off, 45 mins job done they were very happy I wasn't as I ordered a black surround and I had to have the car back together the next day. o well next time

Mine was in for 3hrs. They loosened the clam bolts nearest the screen just to the screen. They knew what they were doing and I had no concerns. I guess it depends from branch to branch. I had a good experience with Autoglass Bracknell, but didn't feel confident enough from the phone call from Autoglass Swindon (first offered to me). As for Ken... there's no way he could have a black surround.... it's not standard!

While this is still being discussed. I noticed a VERY small chip, when I say small I mean I thought it was a speck of dirt when cleaning and only realised when I ran my nail over it and felt the chip. It's about as close to the surround as possible. Expect it will need replacing, do I wait till I have my clam off (due a rad change in the next month or so) or get them out now before a cold spell cracks it further? Might look into possibilities of heated screen. Does anyone have a picture of one up close so you can see the heating lines in it? Not had one before so don't know if it will irritate me constantly being there.

my screen was broken enough to justify a replacement. my windscreen cover amount didnt actually cover the cost of the windscreen! I then phoned the insrance, fond out my total cover costs, and asked if i could sort and claim the money back. I bought my screen from ricky evans motorsport (they supply all otherpeople that make heated screens), i then had this fitted. we re used my original surround. If you want any more help lt me know. Dave.

I was just bout to pm you after reading other threads. So ricky's is just the screen? Hmm was rather looking for a black surround though I guess with no screen in it would be easy job to wrap it.

Hi All, Just to clarify - I can use an S2 windscreen as a replacement on the VX? It's not urgent at the moment I just have some little chip marks showing and sooner or later it'll want to get it replaced. I have no chance of getting a new VX windscreen here in New Zealand, but I think I can get an S2 for about $1200(nz). Thanks Guys.

S2 windscreen is identical, if you ever plan on fitting a hard top make sure you have one ready for when the window is fitted, as the alignment can be out and the HT will never fot properly, if at all.
