Anyone got any tips for getting the bottom UJ off so I can remove the steering rack, all bolts undone top and bottom and the shaft moves freely up and down but I can't seem to get enough movement to pop it off at the rack end. Really really don't want to remove the dash :(

Surely on a job like this 6 screws in the dash is not going to add much to the job though mate.

I may have to resort to it, but TIS implies it's doable without. I've removed the dash before, didn't enjoy it.

Have you removed the rack to footwell bolts? if you do that it will allow you to push it slightly away from the UJ and should come off easily.

I recently replaced my rack, I JUST managed to get the lower UJ off without removing the dash and loosening the upper column, however i couldn't get it back on so i had to remove the dash.

Dont forget the starter button if you end up taking the dash off.

I had to take the dash off too, not impressed after getting stuck in the footwell pulling on the rack.

Same as that. Except not recently. But I also replaced the UJ's and intermediate shaft anyway.

The most hateful job in the world but finally the UJ's are off. I've ordered a new set of UJ's, figured I'd change them too now I've dismantled 1/2 the bloody cabin, not doing that again!

I've managed to remove the rack without taking dash off but finally ended up removing the dash as there was not enough clearance to fit intermediate shaft to new rack.

You loosen the top joint and this allows more than enough movement from my job on the rack. Getting the bugger centred was a bit of a faf mind.

:lol:/> I spent ages getting the rack, shaft and wheel perfectly centred. Then killed the VX 4 months later. Would still do it again...except for the crashing part. Last thing to tighten was the shaft to rack joint, then the 3 bolts into the top mount.
