The Piper mani's were prone to cracking, at least the one I have lying here...

Hi Captain! My VX has a completely standard induction.... but has had the following configurations.. My first mod was 4-1 Tullett Manifold had pre cat removed at the same time... car still had the original back box (original manifold had cracked) as per vocky's post this gave very noticeable increase in mid range torque and really helped the engine to rev out at the top end..... I understand this is exactly what 4-1 as a configuration gives.... v pleased. My car then had a 2.5 tullett back box fitted - this didn't do a hell of a lot performance wise but the engine reved a lot better and felt de-restricted in comparison to before... almost like having a couple of KG off the flywheel... I'm currently having a lightweight flywheel fitted (uprated clutch) and a 4.17 final drive box as my 3rd gear syncro has had it... so I am interested to see how this effects the car when its all done! Hope that helps from someone who has done it in stages..... Firthy

It's not uncommon to see 240-250bhp with standard manifold and Milltek exhaust with SC'd cars.

I got 249bhp (SC) with standard manifold, VSE, and with precat removed.... Rather loud though...

I got 249.8 SC-ed HP's with a Piper mani and 2.5 downpipe + a Turbo backbox. Nice and quiet.

Was an SC specific issue though huh.

Thanks for all the replies. Been reading lots of other posts on here about tuning the NA - seems there are plenty of different routes taken, all with similar results.

Chris_UK's project page has made for a very interesting read - thanks thumbsup

One thing that stands out is that most of the NA tuners seem to have gone over to SC at some point - which is certainly food for thought. I'd like to avoid spending £1k+ on NA mods and then go SC anyway... I think cheap and cheerful NA mods may be the way forward for a while...

Thanks for this - be good to hear how you get on with the flywheel and final drive changes.

With your exhaust, did you keep the standard down pipe and just remove the pre-cat or did you add the tullett down pipe too? Do tullett parts bolt straight onto standard exhaust sections or were adapters needed?

Thanks Stuwy. I see you're from Grays too, haven't seen your VX around but I'll keep my eye out. Good to know there's some fellow vx'ers locally.

I generally stick to the standard air box too but the K&N is already on my car plus the sound is addictive...

The SC conversion available is easily the most obvious upgrade, in terms of spend vs. BHP increase it's certainly the most cost effective and it has been developed to the point where it is a fit and forget conversion, keep in mind that the majority of the parts used are factory fitted GM parts on the supercharged Chevy Colbalt SS in the US. I would suggest that you ensure any changes you make are suitable for a supercharger conversion in the longer term, exhaust changes should be fine.

I just kept the standard cat, so its 2.5 Tullett mani, standard cat (pre cat drilled out) 2.5 tullett back box at the moment. Yes looking forward to it..... its going in to BOT at the end of next week for the box, fly and clutch.... my next track day is at Spa with the LOT crew so I will be sure to get some video up.. My strategy was not to mess about with the 2.4 induction as like yourself..... I had heard from people I trust that without the remap they a bit flat (in the mid range)... Obviously the OBD tuner package changes things... I actually like the torque in the mid range of the standard car and I think that the 4-1 works quite well with the standard inlet as it still has a solid mid range and the mani helps the top end... I have some video (bad quality) of me chasing a cup 240 around snetterton 300 for about 4 - 5 laps you would be amazed at how little there was between the 2.... my mid range was so much better I had to lift in places!

Oh and I get BOT to stick a new filter in regularly, which keeps the inlet as fresh as possible.... The filters cost buttons...
