Hi,

I'm new here. I'm in the proces of buying a 2.2 speedster. Price is good, condition is reasonable. The deal is almost done.
I come from an entirely different kind of car. I bought the speedster based on it's potential and sublime handling alone.
I'm used to rolling about in a V10 powered car on the weekends and a lifted diesel wrangler during the week.
My M5 got nicked (shame that, i loved that thing) and i decided i wanted something radically different. Tracking the M5 was very expensive and it always felt as if i was trying to drift my living room ... super fun, but kind of expensive as i said.

I had driven an elise S1 before. I loved it but it felt verrrry pokey to me. Then drove the 2.2 speedster some years later. Better, but still pokey.
I read about supercharging the z22se and ... well ... hello speedster, where have you been all my life :)
I still have to get it done, so please get me in touch with people that do conversions.

ANYWAY ... the original point of my post.
First, a disclaimer.
The opinions expressed in this post are merely that ... my opinions ... i'm not trying to start a flamewar, nor am i "looking down" on anyone by wanting to do things a bit differently.

Okay, so now i can complain and rant freely.
My point is very simple.
Love the car, hate the noise.
I CANNOT STAND FOUR CYLINDER NOISES ... except for big bang configs and/or vee fours and boxers ...
Anyway, this brings me to my point.

I want to do a set of unequal length headers for my 2.2 ... just to get that off-beat rumble going.
Now i know a lot of you will think i'm stoopid and disagree. I'm fully anticipating the "JUST PULL THE #3 PLUG MATE YOU'LL BE FINE" comments and such ... to that i say ... flame on :)
But in the meantime, i'd like to get some useful info too.
Has anyone ever done this to a vx/speedster? If so ... could you help?

I leave you with the kindest regards.

-Kevin

Don't know if its ever been done or not, NA's are not my area of knowledge, Vocky and others will know tho! but Dave Hardwick could certainly make you whatever you want should you be the first!

Hi MrSimba,
Thanks for the pointer. I've got a guy here that's pretty famous in the subaru scene that's willing to do the work.
I'm looking for what ratios to use for the headers, which muffler would work best etc, etc.
I'm almost 100% sure i need to go for an absorption type muffler. Best knock the precat out too.

They do sound rubbish. It helps to change the note a bit with a Milltek or similar.

Blower Cams give you a nice wobby idle. Don't do much across the rest of the rev range though I'm afraid.

I've got a set of piper regrinds that came with it. I just don't know if it'll work with the S/C ...

Good luck with that, if you can get a nice "fruity" sounding exhaust you'll make lots of friends :)

This is the effect of unequal length headers:

ie .. the "subaru noise" in this case on a 1.6L POS honda crx del sol ... something that should sound most uninspiring.
I will deffo post pics and measurements on how to do it if it works.

No, correction, what I hate more than anything is the sound of a Z22SE with a Tullet 3.0" exhaust and manifold plus a Stage 3 supercharger pulley. The very definition of pain.

It's quite simple for me ... I want to either
A Make it sound like a subaru, but quiet.
B Make it so quiet i risk ruining the starter by starting it two or three times, several times a day.

So ... we do certainly agree in some sort of odd way.
