I thought the ttv flywheel was the one Courtney's sell? If this isn't the case what the difference?

depends which engine you are talking about, the 2.2 flywheel courtenay sell is two piece (flywheel and ring gear) and the TTV version is a single piece billet steel item

Is mine a 2 piece as well? I bought from Courtney's as I thought they supplied the 2.2 TTV one :beat:

I honestly don't remember, but there is nothing wrong with the courtenay 2.2 flywheel, it's a very good piece of kit thumbsup

Ahh, thought I'd missed out on some really clever new kind of flywheel. Phew.

I have to admit I have a bit of a love hate relationship with the light weight flywheel. I think something like a 7 kg flywheel might be a better compromise for road use. It makes stop start driving a bit of a chore, but as mine isn't a daily driver so not too much of a problem.

I had my standard Flywheel lightened and balanced at Chesman Engineering in Coventry. I can't remember how much lighter it is but I certainly noticed the improvement.

Is this the slight hesitation then thump of power I have in slow to crawling traffic?

With a normal flywheel you can let the clutch out gently and the car would pull away with no throttle required. With the lightweight you have to give revs or it will stall. My car also has high lift cams which adds to the problem. It makes the car very difficult to maintain very low speeds in first gear. You can drive around these issues but as with most thinks in life you don't get something for nothing!

I have never noticed any real difference when I pull away in my vx compared to my other standard cars and thats with a sub 5Kg flywheel and no balancer chain stuff

Hi All, Courtneys now stock TTV... just bought the 4.2kg lightweight flywheel........ so I now have a standard N/a with a lightweight flywheel, uprated clutch and a 4,19 :) (plus tullett blah blah blah) As per Vocky I haven't noticed a huge amount of difference either when pulling away. Firthy

I have to give mine a few extra rpm on pulling away but don't have problems with crawling along in traffic.

I understand now, the hesitation is the stalling then it springs to life with revs.

That's because you don't drive it Vocky and also now have 2.5 litres to lug it along! It isn't a major issue but also doesn't feel OEM.

Keep in mind than even with a light flywheel you still bolt a (standard/heavy) pressureplate to the flywheel to make up the clutch, So even though a 4kg flywheel compared to an OEM 9kg may sound light, the percentage loss when looking at the total weight of flywheel + pressureplate is a lot less and the inertia is not reduced *that* much so it's an issue under normal use with an organic clutch. (ceramic or metallic clutch plates will of course always be harder to work with as they don't like to slip) Even with a 3.6Kg flywheel on the Honda engine in my Elise it would still pull away without needing to use the throttle at all. It's when you start fitting a flywheel that can accept a small diameter multi-plate clutchpack (also very light) that you get into the 'hard to pull away' range IMHO.. ;) Bye, Arno.

or perhaps it's because I like blipping the throttle to hear the itb's

My lightweight flywheel will be coming off next time the engine is out. I don't like it. Another 'improvement' that was anything but

Drove my car to work today and the car felt much better. This is probably down to me rather than the car. I always think the problems are worse than they are when not driving the car. You can difference when pulling away but the only time it causes an issue is hill starts and traffic jams.
