I've just fitted a apexi air filter, just wanted to make sure its running right. Is it normal that it sounds likea dump valve? a loud wooshing noise on gear change and very loud when i let off? Doesn't seem any louder than the drilled air box, if anything more quieter but the wooshing noise is loud!

Normal although I'd say mine sounds a lot louder compared to an oem drilled airbox that I had before

I don't know the construction of an Apexi but it will sound very different to a paper filter , the metal gauze style have a noticeable dyson air flowing noise

I've always had cone filters of some sort on my cars except turbo cars and wasn't sure the dump valve noise was normal, just thought id check as it is pretty loud

I think their reputation is loud. The ITG sounded like a geezer with asthma.

As long as its not a "chatter" then its fine, the woosh is the recirc working, but a chatter would be the turbo stalling, due to a failed recirc. Woosh good, chatter bad....... :)

Do you really hate your engine that much to not fit an OEM spec paper filter?

Part of stage 4 isn't it? Seems to be the best aftermarket filter for the vx so why not

I have just purchased one of these units with the 65mm flange after some good reviews from fellow VXT owners. The noises you describe match what they claim it sounds like fitted. Should make the induction noise much more interesting.....Not everyones preference but then we are all different, right?

Its a controversial mod but it should allow more direct air flow...

The debate centers around what it considered best in terms fo filtration.
Cotton and foam are notoriously bad when it comes to filtering small (and even large sometimes) particles, which damage the engine.
Paper cloggs more easily, but you just change it more regularly. the foam route is possible but its bespoke and very expensive (as i've just found out since i can't fit a standard paper filter in)

Yeah I wasn't going to bother with a aftermarket filter for those reasons but heard a lot of good things about the apexi and its not foam so thought I'd go for it

Really strange, not long ago there was a massive thread with people praising the filter
