Good people of the VX forums - a question. Here is my situation (I'm sure not unique to myself). I have insured my VX as garaged so I have to tuck my baby away at something like 9.00 or 10.00 at night if I am at home. My house has an integral garage. When browsing these forums I have seen that several VX's have been burnt out - at least one of which was a parked car. I have an NA which is an 03 plate. My question is should I worry about the car setting on fire whilst parked in the garage? The consequences of this happening one night when we are all in bed (wife and two kids) is of course unthinkable. Thanks in advance

Probably far more likely with a car that has more electronics.... I think you're worrying over something that is highly unlikely.

Leave it outside, it does not need to be tucked up in the garage every night. You could have loads of reasons why it was not in the garage its still insured. Its as safe as any other car with regards to fire risk.

We had a car left on the road that should have been tucked up and a kid smashed into it in the early hours. Funnily enough no M.I. 5 inquiry they just paid up. Would anyone seriously ring the insurance company and tell them the car will be on the front tonight because I have just unloaded some stuff into my garage or I am to pissed to put it away  .

Dont worry..

Ihave you got a link to where you saw them set on fire from being parked?

I haven't I'm afraid. I have just had a search on the forums and can't find it again. It was quite a while ago I saw it - all I can remember is that it was a blue VX and the poster posted a picture before and after, claiming to have parked up and come back to a burnt out car. The only thers I have seen were cars on track days and a lightning once in a scrap yard with no mention of the circumstances it burnt out in.

I don't think it is big risk, but the thing that worries me the most is that my youngest son's bedroom is directly above the garage.

Don't worry about that if your house is to the regs it should have fire resistant board on the ceiling if a room is above.

I remember paying for double thickness fire proof plaster board stuff when I made mine,Safest room in the house

Every other car on the road is capable of self-combusting, ergo you shouldn't get a car at all and should only have pushbikes. I'm only aware of two VX's that have gone up in flames. Both on the road whilst being driven. One we think was possibly down to fuel lines being ruptured but no idea about the cause of the second one.

The bedroom was an extension - and yes I remember fireproofing being installed and inspected.

Thanks everybody for your replies - I do feel a bit better but will consider fitting a smoke alarm of some kind.

Found the previous post - I was wrong, it looks like the car was being driven at the time.

here

I also found another post saying that LY No 79 burn't out - but that was while it was being driven as well.

Maybe not as much a risk as I thought.

Simply fill your garage with all sorts of assorted crap including bikes that don't get ridden and shoes nobody wears anymore and a washing machine. That way the car won't fit and everyone is safe!
