Been looking for a challenging project and managed to find the right engine. So I hitched up the trailer and set off.

Heading North. Sunrise in Belgium.

Posted Image

Across the Channel.

Posted Image

To Dover.

Posted Image

...and to Scotland (actually, I only needed to go to Carlisle, but took the chance to go over the border for the first time in 25 years).

Posted Image

Funny, coming the other way England doesn't welcome you.

Anyway, the engine was loaded, and I headed South.

Posted Image

...buying a few other things on the way.

Posted Image

Took a bit of unloading.

Posted Image

So, you probably want to know what it is?

It's a Bristol Hercules 14 cylinder, sleeve valve radial engine, as fitted to (amongst other aircraft) the magnificent Bristol Beaufighter.

Posted Image

Most Halifax's.

Posted Image

...and many Wellingtons.

Mine's a later one from a Vickers Varsity.

It's 38.7 litres, supercharged, carb fed, revs to 3000rpm-ish where it delivers 1950 BHP depending on altitude and temperature.

The VX is going to need some work to get it to fit. I'm not sure the F23 will be able to cope even if I could get drive from the centre of the engine to the gearbox. There's also the problem of the Hercules being aircooled - never easy in a mid engined car.

It weighs 1 tonne so I'll have to get the suspension recalibrated as I think that's a little more than the 20LET.

With that kind of torque it will need traction control, but getting 21st centuary electronics to talk to a 1940's carb isn't going to be easy.

Maybe fitting it would spoil the character of the VX?

What do you think?

Nice! Wonder if I can convince the Mrs we need a coffee table that will take up the whole living room and needs a fork lift to move?

No, the other drums were in the car. I have a strange setup. I'm left handed and right footed, I also don't have great reach, so I have the base drum where the hi hat is and the hi hat is operated by the other foot via a cable. With a really big bass drum like that (26 inch-er) that keeps the toms all together so easier for me to reach. Looks wierd, works a treat.

I tried using a cable operated hi hat because I really don't see why drum sets are set up to play crossed hands but I just didn't get on with the one I tried. Looks like you've got a nice place to play in.
