I prefer the noise of the SC too. Just don't want so much of it as it's too much of a scream with the 2.9" pulley on. You could have run a nice reasonably civilized VM7000. Chav. :P

A VM7000 sounds nice (I'm a sucker for products with a letter / number combo), but I'm also Scottish, and tight(ish), and Apexi does a job..

I'll re-evaluate when the 3.1" pulley goes on.. :D

Would a second throttle body work infront of the charger? Loads of the guys who fit hybrid chargers to MX5's do this to drown out noise but also to deal with the pressure with TB closed.

Agreed. It already sounds fast, just written on the page. I sold it short initially and called it the VM700 which is obviously much slower. I think it was actually a similar price to the Apexi. Whatever else, it's much more ear friendly than the silly cone filter Courtenay fitted and definitely dampens the top end shrill notes of the M62 with the 2.9" pulley.

A lot of production cars use resonator boxes to cut induction noise.  Might be worth browsing ebay to see if there's one that has the same sized pipework the SC uses.

You can see one on this gran-cos between the airbox and plenum.

Standard air box flows plenty but no way to fit it without moving the ecu, I've tried.

When the new engine and ECU finally go in my car, I'll definitely be relocating the ecu to get a modded NA airbox (which is actually better than the turdo's) back in the car and hope to lose most of the supercharger whine. Especially if I fit a slightly larger pulley.

Try harder...

It fits, but needs relocation and fabbing some new mounts.

Ow, and the important bit: No Whine!

(He wanted an SC  conversion, but as quiet as possible => Airbox + VXT backbox. thumbsup  thumbsup )

I have heard Martin's car on drive by at pretty much full chat at GW last year and all the noise is induction.  The whine actually sounds loud but isn't really.  All you can hear is the "hoover"

I have a video somewhere.....

And there's where it all falls down. Fabbing? Hmmmm, outside my skillset. I'm much more qualified at breaking out the debit card and buying stuff. It doesn't help that I haven't got any of the original mounting brackets to even know how the airbox even originally fitted. They went years ago in a Vocky inspired removal of anything in the engine bay that wasn't needed.

Well, that's good then, as I didn't use any of the original fixings... B)

I had exactly the same same issue as this and hunted around for a solution. Using Techies advice, I looked at the enclosed airboxes. Having had a Pipercross cone filter literally disintegrate on my old car leaving the throttle body breathing unfiltered air, I wanted to steer clear of them tho. Ended up using a carbon bodied BMC CDA filter that I got from eBay for £35 second hand. 10 minutes of K&N filter cleaner and it was as good as new! Really happy with the results too. Takes the annoying tone of the whine off completely, though its still audible on full throttle. That, along with a Pipo modded back box, and Im really happy with the results...

See post number 60 for details  ;)

Martin how old is the packing in your back box ,If its quite old might be worth repacking it with race HT packing , It will help bring the DB level down

Its not the exhaust. It has 2tubulars in for life packing its all induction noise.

Looking into all the above suggested ideas. Thanks all. Hopefully wil have something done before Zandvoort.

I would say that OEM airbox is a clam or SC off job.

I did try this last winter with the clam on with no success.

I just could not get it in there with the SC and clam in Place.

Maybe you are a bit more clever than I was or have a bigger hammer.

ITG made the one that Lee and I use based on a set of parameters i gave them.
I wanted sub 5µm filtering (still not as good as paper but very nearly) and i wanted it rated for 300hp.
Thats why the box is so huge.
Agree with Lee, its a subtle reduction but i think the biggest change is outside the car.

Just a shame they seem to have done nothing in the way of fluid dynamic design to optimise the flow or minimise pressure loss

Is that with the bottom half of the standard box in place too?  I use the standard box but the bottom is butchered to make it fit, filter needs cleaning regularlary though as it is so exposed.

^^ off course the complete filter box unit with bottom. This is the new bottom mount (2K glued on frame rail):

And I re-used the modified NA intake tube for the perfect OEM look. :

If fits... just... And filter change is a bit of work now, but NO WHINE!
