Did a 220 mile drive and all good except a loose cat off the manifold. Got home, jacked the car up, diffuser off, re bolted the cat, diffuser on and lowered the car.

Drove the car into the garage, all normal.

Went to move the car and hour later and the grear selection is like pushing the lever through really rough toffee?

The clutch is fine, the gears go in ok, its just really tough to move the gear lever.

Car is an na/sc.

Any ideas?

Is there any heat shields round the gear cables?

Heat might have got to them and then cooled down in the garage  :(

That would be my guess, Mine started doing this after a track day then about 2/3 weeks of being a daily driver they snapped. :(

The loose cat has probably been rubbing against the cables and melted them.

You can check this by taking the gear cables off at the gearbox end and moving the gear stick. If they are still tough then it's probably a shagged cable.

Mine died of old age and were replaced with the cablecraft ones from elise shop. Horrid job though.

I didnt jack the car up and work on it until a day after my last drive and the gearbox was fine when started cold, worked on then put away again.

Its as if jacking it up and down again has somehow done something?

Does the toffee feeling go away once it's been driven for 10mins? If so then cables is your most likely bet as the heat often remelts the cables

Reach in from above where? under the gear lever leather surround?

Off for a quick drive in a mo to see what happens.

Engine bay. Disconnect the gear cables and try the selector mechanism on top of the gearbox. Whilst they're off, sit in the car and try the gearstick to see if you can still feel some reluctance to move smoothly. If so, you've melted the inner lining of the cables like most of us have done and they need replacing and ideally insulating from the heat of your exhaust.

Just been for a test drive AND, a stone came over missed my head by about an inch and smashed the rear screen!!! I am not having a good day.

When hot the gears do select more easily though still not great.

How do you replace gear cables, how easy is it (I'm guessing out of my skill range)  and where do you get them from?

Martin

ps Separate post about rear screesn starting now.

Ooops. Been there. Luckily it didn't break the screen as it bounced off the headrest as I dodged out of the way. Straightforward enough to replace, just a bit fiddly when it comes to the interior part of the job. I think BoT have become experts though, if you don't fancy it. Get the replacement (upgraded) cables from Elise-Shop at a fraction of the cost of the Vauxhall OEM version. thumbsup

Will try and disconnect the gear cables this weekend. Is it a diffuser off job?

Why are the gear cables only sold in pairs? Do we need two?

You can do it from above but you will probably have to take the charge cooler tank out.

They connect at the top rear of the box so you should be able to get to them from there. Your not having a great day!

Just had mine done. Speak to Cablecraft directly as they had a run on them after the national and no one had stock. They made some up next day for me though and gear change now feels better than ever. Oh, and i paid someone to fit mine!
