My charge cooler header tank is in the boot so I can see the gear cables easily. Do you just undo the two bolted parts. Am concerned I will end up with no gearbox either if I mess with these as not having much luck today.

ps Tried to change plugs earlier in the day but they wouldnt shift, and luckily gave up on them. If I had continued to try I can only imagine what would have happened!

In what way pop off. Any pics, details.  Do you just undo the small nuts.

To be honest as it smooths up with heat, and the fact that my manifold and cat have fallen apart twice now I'm guessing your all correct in that the cables have been heated more than normal. The other day though they hadnt totally fallen apart there must have been a lot of abnormal hot gases being blown around under there as had to try and get home and did 100 miles with the join being held by just one loose nut instead of 3 tight ones and going by the smell there was a lot of exhaust gases being blown out.

Martin sounds like it could be the inside of the cables have started to melt , New cables when you get them replaced cover them in heat shield this works well

No, no nuts need undoing. You just lever the two balljoints off the selector mechanism on the top of the gearbox. Just insert a 10mm or 12mm open ended spanner underneath the joint and lever up and it should pop off the selector.

Just insert the end of the spanner or decent sized screwdriver under the cup, roughly were the green lines are and lever.

Worth upgrading your nuts if they keep coming loose? I used Philidas turret nuts on the noble. I think they were about 71p a nut.

My exhaust broke intwo just under where it joins the manifold. That was re welded and bolted back on. Not having much luck with things bolted on by others lately.

I'll pop those ball joints off and have a feel but pretty sure your all correct and the cables have melted. Seems my lose bolts have now cost me new gear cables and a new rear screen. Thought I'd got away with just fitting new bolts! I also have part of the manifold gasket tinkling around in my exhaust which I'm hoping will blow out.

Definitely feels like a good call, in not continuing to try and fit new plugs on Laurens car today!

May be an idea squirting some penetrating fluid in the spark plug holes the day before undoing to soak in. And good luck when you do come to do them :/

Did the penetrating fluid the night before on the plugs, made no difference and with the luck I was having decided to leave well alone for now.

Went to pop off those gear cable ends, looks worrying to me. How easily do they go back on, do they not disapear into the depths opnce you give the ears a wiggle.

They're retained by a bracket about two inches away, they won't go anywhere. They go back on relatively easily. I think I fitted the cable craft ones by putting them in place and seating them by hitting them with a 1/2 extension

they are held in , ie the ball made captive in the cup by a small spring clip you slide in and then rotate to secure

The original Vauxhall ones don't have a retaining spring clip.

It seems that when jacking up the car and doing the manifold bolts, a cable had come out of its clips or seating omething and just got very tight.

All sorted by Bot when they were fixing the rear screen.
