What's The Best Clutch For A Stage 4 Tubby

Hi,

 

I am looking for a vx220 turbo clutch that will handle 330lb/ft but feel as close to stock as possible in terms of feel.

I accept the pedal will be heavier unless I mucked about with the hydraulics.

I have fitted uprated clutches in many cars and often been disappointed with stuff like grabby clutches at low rpm and all or nothing at the bite point.

 

Can anyone suggest the best one in this respect, or if needs be a flywheel/clutch package.

I'm personally looking for the 300lb/ft, with the same requirements as you.

Helix 6 paddle and uprated Helix pressure plate. Some may say courtenay competition clutch. But I have the Helix 6 paddle and I'm happy with it.

+1 for the helix 6 paddle It's feels a bit heavier than oem but IMO it feels better for it. I spoke to lots of people including sach and I got mixed responses (organic) regarding what lbft torque they can handle so I want for the 6 paddle as this can take a lot of lbft torque but I know quite a few people on here are using them with other 300lbft torque

I can only give you my opinion compared to standard but I guess turboluca can give you an unbiased opinion as he has no doubt had them all lol

Courtenay helix completion clutch for me. It handles my 330 odd torque no problem and feels very OEM.

^ same Bear in mind which one Courtenay use for their stage 4 package ie Helix organic.

Our clutch is only circa 280mm wide, so in order to cope with 330 ft/lb the only your options are:

 

1. Adopt a multi plate clutch (Eg. M32) - not recommended for complexity reasons and I'm not sure there is even enough room in the bell housing of an F23.

2. Adopt a cera-metalic friction material (on a paddle plate usually) and stronger clutch cover.

3. Universal 7.5" clutch setup (very expensive and will wear out fast). SBD are a good source for these.

 

I looked into all this heavily 4 years ago and option 2 above is the only realistic one unless you are rich. There are 2 suppliers for option 2:

 

1. Sachs

2. Helix.

 

Courtenay's are a reseller of Helix (and used to do Sachs too at one time). You can ring Helix direct and haggle and get it cheaper like that if you want.

The Sachs is rated 20ftlbs lower than the helix..... My car destroyed a Sachs (ripped it off the splines).

Probably wrong but I'd have thought a launch would stress the clutch more than track work. When my original clutch started to go it was worse on the road than on track. With 320+torques I changed to the Courtenay heavy duty organic clutch /cover and for 5K,ish miles including half a dozen track days it was more than man enough, although I did only run it for approx 8 months before I converted to an M32 'box. In fact this reminds me, I still have it and the lightweight fly it was coupled with so you might see it soon in the for sale section :)

I never really do launches so is more than likely the track work, bearing in mind the clutch itself was fine, it was just ripped off the shaft... I would think that's caused by fastish changes on track where you are clutch to floor then lift up quickly as you up shift and that shaft suddenly takes all that torque?

I have one of these, but never fitted it.

The company doesn't have the best reputation, but i gathered from vaux forums this specific clutch is pretty good.

 

Yours for 100quid if you fancy a risk. (Would need to reuse existing release bearing)
