Hello one and all, some of you  may remember a post of mine where I stated it was practically raining in my VX (and to be fair I am beginning to loose a little love).

 

In brief, the roof really leaks from the window bars at the front, the windscreen seal does not have the little trays on it and has degraded hugely. If it is the window seal is it able to leak through the window bars?

 

Furthermore, the roof lets water through all over now! I have treated it with Autoglym Cabriolet Protector (having bought the pack following advice on here) and nothing! The roof still leaks.

 

The car is practically unusable as it's so wet.

 

Is it worth me purchasing scothguard for outdoor fabric?

 

Please advise, as it's so disheartening.

 

Additionally, any advice on affordable rear tyres is really appreciated as I have to replace them as well - 255 45 r17 I think.

You really need to soak it in the autoglym stuff to get a good result and then, once saturated you need to dry it hard so its properly bone dry.  I find that I get two cleans/protects from an autoglym roof kit.

 

WRT the front seal, swap it!  I had the original one and it dripped in on the front corners of the window / sidebar join.  Once you have the new seal make sure your windows are adjusted properly.  This is a pain in the arse to do but worth spending the time to get it right.

They're 225/45 17 - Toyo T1R or similar will do.

I remember seeing a waterproofing material used by hikers - someone I knew washed their jeans in it and made it waterproof. Worth trying something like that on the roof.

Just replace the seal. If it is degraded, and you are one of those kind of chaps who thinks that getting wet is a bad thing, then it's seems the only thing to do.

Autoglym should have done the trick I did mine 2 years ago and it is still watertight, in fact at Le Mans one year it pooled in the middle but did not let the rain in.

Thanks for the responses. Yes mate I am one of those chaps, with the shocking heaters and rain inside the car I am beginning to loose a little heart here.

The trick with most proofers is getting it dried.  Most are latex based so are water soluble until completely dried.  A bit of effort should see you ship shape.
