They work!

Been doing this run for 7 years now, they had to switch them on sooner or later, so waiting to see how many others tumble through the letterbox, fingers crossed.

Did they just flash or did you get a letter?

^^^ that. They've been flashing, sometimes completely randomly, for years now. Did you get a letter?

Thanks for the heads up, I use that stretch quite often.  Which direction were you going and what speed did they allege?

I have seen them flash, not for me though. There are one or two of them that regularly flash every single car even though they are well under the limit. They should only work when the signs are lit up.

I got flashed 9 days ago and got a surprise, I have never seen them work before... I am confident I was doing about 80 - 85max, pretty sure it was the lower end. No ticket yet. The M25 jct 10 - 17 cameras are due to be switched back on this summer after never working. http://www.dailymail...le-stretch.html

As Ian says, the cameras don't work unless they have a posted limit.

Currently... Though my Uncle has been informed, just before Christmas, that this was about to change. He has run many of the motorway infrastructure projects in recent years. He point blank advised us (family) to never breach 80mph in a 'managed' section as this is likely to be the trigger point even when the signs are off.

Got the NOIP sitting on my desk heading North Junction 10 to 11, indicated speed in red circle 50mph I was doing 60mph. Did not see any flash, noted as variable speed on the letter.

I should add here that the date of the offence is 10/01/14 on the letter and I do the run on a regular basis so as said I could have others coming but hope not.

Does it tell you how long the variable limit had been showing 50mph? If you want to contest it that may be your arguement - was there sufficient time to respond / visibility issues so was not aware of it changing.

I take it is has been set at 50mph for some time, I.e. roadworks. I can't think which bit I am thinking of, I commute from Jn42 to jn1 every month or so, and there is a stretch where it is variable 10mph-70mph. I thought you may have tripped a 50mph flag, which had only just turned from NSL or 60mph. I have been waiting for a ticket to come through for a sign that changed from 60mph to 30mph when I was just about to pass under it. There was no way I could have shaved off 30mph in the 20-30yrds I had, and god knows what would have happened behind me if I had just buried the middle pedal.

This subject came up at a speed awareness course I attended last year. The ex traffic officer believed the speed signs are NOT legal, law says black on white background within red border, not white on black. I did look up the law at the time and these colours are clearly defined...if it were me I would definitely test this in court!

I pondered that myself.

So they could still do you for going over 70, but not if you were doing 60 when the variable limit was 50 ?

Zuber. The variable speed gantry lights showed 50mph in a red ring, (not that I remember them) meaning that is the max speed you can do between gantries where they have the cameras, my average was 60 so I got done.

Is it an average speed between gantries then? I thought it was just an instant speed check.

There is no mention of an average speed on any signs, just a variable limit.

Not every Gantry has cameras.

On the stretch between Luton and Hemel, which I use every day, every gantry can have a different speed lit up and you can see at least three gantries at a time.

Tonight they were all at 60 and there was hardly any traffic.

I am sure they cause accidents as you often get people braking hard as the speed changes or they light up. They cause more jams than there have ever been on that stretch.
