I cannot see how they can be 'average speed' as they are defined as variable limit, and use Gatso style cameras rather than the yellow 'Average Speed' units. Also if it doesn't mention average speed to road users I cannot see how they could enforce it. Plus... as ianrm has mentioned on the M62 I use (as well M1 and M42) each sign states a different speed and often different lanes show different speeds, so how they could enforce an average speed calculation is beyond me.... It will take us all back to the flase suggestions of constantly switching lanes to avoid the 'average speed' calculations.

I have been waiting for a ticket to come through for a sign that changed from 60mph to 30mph when I was just about to pass under it. There was no way I could have shaved off 30mph in the 20-30yrds I had, and god knows what would have happened behind me if I had just buried the middle pedal.

I think they must have a time delay between the limit changing and the camera being activated to the new limit. As a truck driver, I drive the motorways a lot (obviously) and have had it several times where the limit has changed as I've gone under it, and its not flashed, yet I know the cameras are active as I have seen pretty much all of them flashing at some point or another

I have a hunch the time allowed is up to a minute?

I've been flashed before, from other cameras just like the M1 ones, and never been Nip'd.

Interesting so you say they check your speed as you pass them not the average speed. Yep I know they are only on sum of the gantries, and have those ones on my road angel. I travel the M25 and M1 each day and assumed without paying attention that the M1 cameras were the same as the M25. Thanks

I'm led to believe the overhead gantry cameras are on the spot speed not average, whereas the yellow cameras on the temporary poles throughout roadworks are the average ones, though don't take that as law. As for the minute time lapse, I have no idea on the length of time but would seem to make sense. Be nice if we had a forum user that worked for the schemes involved!!

As I understand the cameras on the overhead gantry's are on the spot.

If they have a red circle and white numbers they are active.

On the stretch of M25 I use none are active as they forgot to apply for the license or something when they were put up. These light up without the red circle.

While we are on cameras then maybe you could ask him another question for me. If you approach a fixed camera at the limit of 30mph, and pass the camera at 30mph, they accelerate past the 30mph within the marked section will the camera take a picture?

Sorry to bring it up again but the law is that a speed sign has to be black on a white background with red circle...the ones on the gantries are white on a black background with red circle so are not legal so you can't be fined. There are a few groups that advise on the matter if you Google it...please!!

Not true. A sign can be made up of yellow and pink blobs if somebody wants. They just need separate approval (to that standard signage) by the DoT if they're to be used for enforcement purposes.

No. The camera's radar assesses your speed at the beginning of the marked lines. If it calculates the you are speeding it takes the two pictures with a fixed time difference.
