They can fail at unfortunate time and crash your car. You can see a few examples on youtube.

Is it easy to tell if you already have them fitted, or is it just worth putting them on anyway if people are changing them regularly? Any specific torque tightening reqs?

68Nm for 10.9 tensile grade bolts. :) Lotus specification
