As would I Jules.

My small scale test build in my shed atm is holding together very well - I cant pull it apart without significant effort. I have cut out some of the pieces but need to find time to do the others and also a sanding belt to fine tune them all to the same size.

I wanted a Splam grille for my Lightning but couldn't afford to wait! Instead I fitted this Audi RS4 style high quality plastic racemesh - I think it looks pretty cool. The mesh is black and about 10mm deep. I bonded some small hardwood blocks on to the inner face of the front clam and retained the grille with stainless steel self-tapping screws and penny washers. It can be bought of eBay for just over £40. The eBay item number is 331177330024.

That grill looks real good, was it a pain to fit? Could you upload a close up of how it's attached please? If it's not too hard I might have a go :-)

The clam needs to come off to fit! Sorry can't get access for a close up of the fixings with clam fitted.

The grille needs to be positioned accurately so the toe eye fits centrally through the honeycomb structure.

I had the very first of the original Splam grills and loved it, though it took a looooooong time to get those moving way back then. I've got to say I like the RS4 style pictured though if they don't happen.

I've removed myself from the list. I'll not be in the country for six months and a grill will be the least of my concerns either during or after my trip.

Given the silly prices original Smetz grills can get, it may be worth approaching somewhere else to make these now. I'd say £250 posted would make it a very profitable run of plastic for any company.

Getting hold of the correct type of mesh seems to be the problem. I can get them made ok if the mesh can be found.

I stand corrected grill

It would be made from scratch, not from cutting a mesh/grill, it's a much more complex shape than it looks, Sam would have spent a LOT of time creating a 3d cad of it to make his Splam grills originally. I'd buy the one for sale today to send to a company to copy it if viable.
