So you fixed the alternator an TRE , how much was transport ?

it does not matter what it cost to fix it, what the vat was and how much it cost to transport it, JB bought it to sell on, that is his business - so good luck with the sale thumbsup

Probably easier to fly out there with alternator in hand. could have stocked up on bootlegged gear too to offset the cost.

The reason I ask is that a friend was looking at a car in Jersey and wondered what happens when he gets to the Port and drives the car off.

If you get it shipped you have to pay VAT. If you drive it you still have to pay VAT but you get 2 weeks to notify it to HMRC. It was a gamble selling into Europe within 2 weeks so I paid the VAT. As a business we get that back anyway but its different as a personal purchase theres no way to avoid it. The downside is of course we will have all the vat and more to pay back. Daft system really.

I thought you don't pay vat as it was a 2003 car ? If over 2005 then vat to be paid ? I had a Belgium Vx I brought bk etc .

Guernsey has special rules. It's a UK car but if it's been there more than 3 years you have to pay VAT to read import it. Totally unfair system but that's the rules!
