So my ewp has a controller, you set the temperature you want and it will turn on / off keeping it at the desired level, this eliminates the need for a thermostat (less weight  )

It also has an external led that can be fitted anywhere and if the pump fails then this will light up.

Ah great, a bloody big light on the dash to tell you to stop driving would be useful. If I ever re-wire my car I'd do something like this.

Will your pump controller vary the voltage/current though, that's where you'd make the best savings on power drain IMO.

I suppose a similar concept could be applied to fuel pumps too, as they pull a lot of amps. You'd have to map accordingly of course, and it would work like a rising rate/dynamic FPR, but with a stronger rising rate.

The reality is though, when you are driving fast/flat out, your car is going to need close to max cooling and max fueling... (ie both pumps working hard).

I know bud my comment was to shut the haters up

I hope that wasn't aimed at me?

I'm not hating on it at all, its an interesting project, just pointing out its not quite the miracle "no parasitic losses" you might of thought.

There's no doubt there's benefits to be had from these setups, most of them you have already mentioned but there's also a plenty of negative points that you probably haven't considered.

Just don't expect noticeable power gains as you might be disappointed......

They're not worse Joe if they run properly.

Your belt driven water pump's rpm is fixed to the engine speed which is not ideal for cold starts and different operating conditions. Your engine's thermal efficiency increases with rpm and load so it doesn't make sense to increase the rpm of your water pump at a fixed rate with the engine as it will be spinning too quickly. I can't see why you would need a thermostat with an electric pump either.

But I'll warn you about Davies Craig pumps as I've heard they're not very reliable.

Good points, the main one being "if they run properly". I've heard about a few in elise's & yet to hear of one that works anything like it should.

Yes the mechanical pump will end up working too hard at high RPM because it has to be able to pump enough at lower RPM, I would have thought the pressure relive valve in the thermostat bypasses a lot of that excess pressure so the pumps not having to push quite as hard as it might otherwise have too.

A couple of points worth considering taking this engine as an example, it should be producing considerably more power (heat) than what the OE pump was designed for & secondly the coolant circuit of these cars is a lot more restrictive than a Civic, so you would actually need a bit more flow & pressure behind it than would be necessary in the standard Civic it was designed for.

All just IMO of coarse!

As said the power gains have been seen and spoken about for a long time as this engine is getting on a bit now so a lot has been tried and tested. I like info though so thanks for that but I also like to see data

I’m more happy about the track benefits this pump can give me and if I gain a couple hp and rev a bit quicker then that’s great and just what I’m after

I think I will spend the evening in the garage doing a few bits and bobs and tidy the garage up

I also like to see data & don't get taken in by BS.

Could you point me in the direction of some genuine test results that are not generic, from pump seller or a half arsed test by some Yank on a forum?

I've seen one but don't think it was done very well because they left it too long between dyno runs, makes me think the pump had slowed down by then & probably didn't kick in again until after the short 5 sec power run. Its a bit like giving it a rev in neutral & saying it picks up quicker but that's because there's no load on the alternator due to he pump not running at full chat.

Joe is also running it at the front in an easy place to change but also just after the main rad so the water running through it will be at its coolest.

 Hopefully meaning a longer life.

trial fitted my spare pump, and this is where it will go once i've got new hoses

mocked up where my oil cooler will be going and plumbed the coolant line:

well the plan was to achieve a bit more than i did today

so i wanted both my guages to look the same, so first i only had a tripple gauge holder so got rid of that (so if anyone needs one let  me know its to replace stereo)

this is what they started off like:

GH4AcMO.jpg

as the aem comes with a silver facia aswell, i decided to spray them both matching colour, then had to sand back the silver gauge so that it would fit and then i will glue in place when the new twin facia plate arrives :)

It’ll kill his alternator and he will go through many many lithium batteries 😄
