Been there for over 12 years with the same Velcro, heavy duty type from Halfords or BQ

The glue on the back of the velcro? It is imperative to get a clean surface on both the body and plate, and not move the car for a few hours to allow the glue to 'go off'.

But you already knew that....(more for the benefit of the OP really)

just buy the super strong stuff on ebay

It can hold a 25+kg so the plate is a piece of cake

Front one has been held on using the Halfords Heavy Duty stuff for 4 and a half years.

MOT never said anything, so I assume it's legal.

Two full length strips of bog standard sticky back Velcro works for me. Only time it comes off is when I catch it with my foot walking past, but I've just shortened it to stop that.
