C3 is a minimum standard. Anyone can make a C3 oil, it'll cost about £200,000 to test. The other claims improve performance.   The other concern is that two of the four additive companies operate slightly more dubiously in how they approach claims, so the performance may not be as it seems. This is why i'm listing known suppliers and oils.

Cheers, so an Asda or Halfords C3. Fully synthetic oil for twenty odd quid is crap ? but will it be ok for a standard NA road use car as surely it's better than the oil recommended and used in 2001 or is that not the case ?

Fez, your previous recommendation was to go for A3/B4 oils, but are C3 oils also OK then? What's the difference? I prefer to get oil from a physical shop if I can so I know I can easily get more. Which oils would you recommend from here? http://www.eurocarpa...5w40-engine-oil I've previously used Shell Helix Ultra in my Accord Type R, which is probably more sensitive to oil than my VXT (high mileage and high revs). Is there anything better I could go for? I would prefer to go for something slightly thicker at operating temperature if I can because my ATR has slightly noisy LMAs when the oil is warm (quiet when cold). Is there any variation in viscosity between different 5w40 oils? Cheers!

C oils are designed for cars with after treatment devices (DPF, some 3 way catalytic converters), A/B are not. This means A/B oils are legacy oils and generally are older technologies. Both have the same performance criteria.

Actually the VXT is more sensitive to oil because it has bucket tappets, which have much higher wear than the roller followers used in the Accord.

No difference in viscosity (or at least minimal difference, will likely change between batches of oil) as all oil formulations target the lowest end of the viscosity grade to minimise cost of viscosity modifiers.

I've just changed my oil to Fuchs Titan 5W-40. Think it was £25 for 5 litres delivered.
