I have found an OBD2 cable in my box of junk under the desk and I have an old Web Book running Windows XP that would be ideal for diagnostic software question is which software do I need and is it free?

I have done some searches but it is all very confusing.

I want to be able to look at fault codes and reset the EML. Big bonus if it would also read the ABS faults though I don't use it so not too fussed about that.

Generic OBDII interface will only talk to the engine ECU. No idea about which generic software (I use a copy of Gendan's Engine Check Pro with my generic interface) to use as your biggest problem will likely be getting the interface recognised properly by Windows in the first place. If you've still got the driver disk that came with the interface, it's probably got some suitable software on there already. If you're wanting something that talks better with the VX and will allow you to diagnose ABS/Airbag/Immobiliser issues, then you'll need to buy an OpCom interface, which will come with a knock off copy of the OpCOM software (which tries to replicate the functionality of the dealers TECH2 device).

These days it's easier to just buy a bluetooth adapter for about a fiver and download one of the many apps available.
