behind the shelf thing there is a large rectangle bit of material you could just add more of something similar to help with the rear noise. It should help but most of the noise is transmitted through the chassis so unless you dampen the engine and box with squishy mounts I think your fighting a loosing battle. I think it would make the car feel sloppy and a bit like (insert normal car here). When I built my car I left out all that sh*t  And I have solid engine mounts so my car makes a lot of noise and buzzes with excitement!

It's certainly true that the wind noise with the roof on is just as much of a problem as the engine bay noise - with the roof off, I don't worry too much about either. I remember there was a thread about a group buy of noise reducing seals around the mirrors and side windows - those were supposed to make a useful difference.

Ok, after much research I think I have the answer.

Mazda MX5 or BMW Z4. We have ex VX220 drivers on the forum that will attest to the warmth and comfort and refinement of these fine alternatives  :)

The soundproofing on the turbo consisted of an A4 sheet of soundproofing mat underneath where the driver's and passenger's feet go. Makes FA difference
