I got accosted last night by this old guy! I'd parked in a car park & saw this guy heading towards me, obvious thoughts going through my mind, I knew I approached the car park sensibly, so thought give him a chance? Then he said 'see that car over there?' Trick question? The one with the dented bonnet, yes! 'What would you give me for that reg'? 9002 VX. Nowt, it doesn't mean owt to me! His face dropped & then said ' well I've been offered 1800 quid for it' I couldn't resist telling him to snap their hands off! Ok no year & VX but what could it mean to anyone?

The vast majority of private reg owners have a problem distinguishing between the cost of something and the value of something.

They normally change hands for considerably lower value than they are advertised for.

I've bought and sold a few over the years.

Indeed, the functional ability of the car should be enough, simply buying combinations of letters and numbers to attract attention serves no purpose other than to pay the system even more just to identify you for a speeding ticket !

I'm not against them, I bought one that was personal & relevant for the car at the time. I sold that car then transferred it to An unrelated car & then it didn't have the same appeal, but was none the less personal, but it did dawn on me that the "cost outweighed the value"! Damned good phrase p4cks!😎

If I could get CH51TER I would as it nearly spells my surname..... CH53TER spells it even better, but I don't own a 53 plate, and the last time I looked it was about 20 grand or something, lol, personally I don't mind personal plates but I guess it's all down to the individual ☺

I have M44NGH and have had it on several cars now. Is it worth much... Nah, it cost Mr £250 from the DVLA nearly a decade ago. Am I happy to have it yes. My Bro has M88NGH so when we go out for a meal we park aside each other... Often gets a look as people walk past.

I do like the personal thing about private plates, they do get looks & some look great when you know who owns them, but car specific & there being no value in them eg A3 on an Astra loses its appeal imho, that's why I left it on the car I sold to bro in law. And then may get another A3 one day & it will be more Appealing? KEV1N would be my ideal, but I think I'd have to be a lottery millionaire if it exists? But again value & cost, would I give a fcuk, probably not?

The number plate on my shed is worth more than the shed, I love it when people tell me this.

In Belgium the price of a special plate is 1000€ (all of it for the state) you realy can put anything on the plate as you see above. Here the plate is from the owner not the car.

I like my plate, it was the cheapest thing on the DVLA website and I still took 6 months to decide to purchase it.... In the end I only bought it because I decided that I spent so long looking at it I must want it

oh and its personal to me so will go on any car :D
