aka the old no throttle, no code chestnut   :ffs:  :ffs:

well almost no throttle.

If I start car with throttle heavily depressed, engine starts at about 4-5,000rpm, then quickly dies back to ~ 1,000rpm

With throttle, sometimes it won't start, sometimes it starts.

After starting:

- Without throttle, hunts around ~1,000rpm, then dies within 20seconds

- With throttle, hunts around slightly high revs ~1,300 but may still die

Why now, this week

No ECU fault code

It's not:

 • The AFM/MAF (tried a different one)
 • The 'loom of doom' (just cleaned it)
 • The throttle body (tried a different one)
 • The cracked manifold (new one in place)
 • Also cleaned throttle connector in footwell
 • ResEt ECU (by removing fuse)

Does a VXT have a EGR valve? (if so, where is it?)

Alright, over to you wise ones......

Oh yeah; smelly exhaust

Could be struggling for air. We had similar symptoms when the boot pipe going from the bottom of the turbo to the intercooler popped off. The car would start but would struggle to get any air and cut out.

As said above check all pipes :)

So, no leaks that I can identify.

And I can add; clean ECU pins to the list

Any further thoughts welcome  :(

what about crank and cam sensors ?

also worth trying a spare coilpack

Smelly exhaust you say.

I think it could be a collapsed cat.

I've had it before on my Zafira,

If you remove the prior to cat lambda probe it will give just enough exhaust flow to prove it, yeah it will pop a code up but it should idle and rev more cleanly.

A new cat and mine run up sweet.

Hope this helps

I've just bought a full Larini system which I'llbe fitting tonight so will have a cat for sale in the next couple of days if you need one. Has done 50k but is fine as far as I can tell.

no crank sensor = no fuel injection , engine dead

no cam sensor = wasted spark and fuel injection , you would notice a relunctance to rev over 5000 , but otherwise drives okay

unplugged lambda = no fuel trim correction , fuel trims will stick at last value , but otherwise drives okay, will get you home

unplugged MAF = switches to speed density mode, no torque request maps , drives like okay, will get you home

faulty coilpack = misfires and will trigger knock ignition retard , drives okay on low engine loads, might have to limp home on 3 cylinders

I've not tested failsafe mode for the MAP sensor, but imagine it will get you home worst case.

MAF falling off the intake, engine will stop, WOT will briefly rev to limiter, for a couple of attempts, then it will close throttle and stall.

Things like a hole in a hose will give misfires, but okay idle, poor torque at engine loads > 10% , also fuel trims will eventually max out, like -25% lean

Leaky vacuum hoses will get a poor idle , and poor turbo boost control , misfires as fuelling will be wrong.

Thank you gentlemen, good to have a list to work.

Going by your list siztenboots:

no crank sensor = no fuel injection , engine dead

Not that

no cam sensor = wasted spark and fuel injection , you would notice a relunctance to rev over 5000 , but otherwise drives okay

Nope

unplugged lambda = no fuel trim correction , fuel trims will stick at last value , but otherwise drives okay, will get you home

Nope

unplugged MAF = switches to speed density mode, no torque request maps , drives like okay, will get you home

I wish!

faulty coilpack = misfires and will trigger knock ignition retard , drives okay on low engine loads, might have to limp home on 3 cylinders

Start here

Things like a hole in a hose will give misfires, but okay idle, poor torque at engine loads > 10% , also fuel trims will eventually max out, like -25% lean

Father in law a mechanic, around tomorrow so will get him to check

If you remove the prior to cat lambda probe it will give just enough exhaust flow to prove it, yeah it will pop a code up but it should idle and rev more cleanly.

definitely worth a shot

Seems to be a few VTX's having issues with dead throttle lately.  Mines been in with MB for a couple of months now and he's systematically working through the systems to find out what the problem is.  Once he nails it, I'll let you know - maybe there's a common failure.

Sorry for ignoring you all - been a bit busy.

Someone who I'm told knows his stuff - has said the problem is my ECU.

Did the air filter, oxygen sensor out to check for collapse cat et. etc

So looking for an ECU, and crossing everything

Cookies - I feel your pain.

Had a week of early starts recently, sunny, no one on the roads, no VXT  :(
