Thought I'd share a small project I'm doing.

I got asked to add some buttons to a Momo airbag wheel for an Exige (same wheel as the VX) for race use and to delete the airbag. This is mainly so a whole new wheel doesn't need to be bought for racing and the decade old airbag is stowed somewhere away from his face.

Below is the initial design.

The airbag wheel is removed and a resistor stops the warning light coming on.

The new centre attaches in around ten seconds as the four buttons are wireless, via a pcb mounted behind the momo badge part. They transmit to four latching relays so they can activate charge cooling, launch control, auxiliary fans, ecu maps or whatever and the relays can be mounted anywhere in the car.

(On this one there is also a shift light, that's what the knob is for, I haven't decided where the LEDs are going yet, so that's unfinished)

It only takes a few seconds to remove the centre, being wireless, and about two minutes to plug in the airbag again and fit the two screws for road use.

The top section was for an additional part for the shift light LEDs, but I'm thinking now of fitting them into the flat area between the top screws. The buttons will be recessed too.

My VX is standard so I'll not be fitting one to it except for the photos, but I understand he appeal of having controls that don't require drilling holes in an increasingly expensive car.

What dya think so far?

Very good, my only question would be: is the standard wheel any good for racing?

Personal preference I guess, this is more for someone doing sprints and small races in road car classes as a hobby who wants to keep the car largely original.

I think it looks fantastic, well done. Even better that you don't have to drill holes everywhere, and is easily reversible

Thanks :) hope to get a final version done later this week, just popped it on here for any input you guys can give on positioning things or how it's best set up.

Thats a great idea, F1 inspired! How much has it cost to do, and is the surround carbon, or carbon wrapped?

It's something I've been tinkering at occasionally for months, the wireless controls have inspired a couple of enquiries about other wheel conversions, but I really don't know what this one has cost in time or I've blanked it out of my mind. Happily I can make them surprisingly cheaply now though. The prototype one in the picture is for the bin, I'll finish my friends one and post a pic and probably pop a couple on eBay before moving on to something else. The material is not a coating, the weave is part of the surface and forms during the heat process without showing stretch marks like a print would. It's carbon fibre kydex, read the gauge console thread as I think I covered it there :)

Hi, it looks really good and is a heat idea. Let us know how much it'll cost to buy of you? And when you might have some ready.

Update on this, the unit below is for a member on here, it's got the wireless buttons without the shift lights. He also came up with the idea of having momentary and latching contacts simultaneously so it has two receivers.

You'll notice that the buttons are now recessed and the badge is raised, so I think it looks a lot better.

This is the one with the shift light for my friend, I'll post up some more pics when I finish it...

I must admit that looks awesome but losing the airbag for me isn't a good move.

That looks really good.

Rather than use a resistor, couldn't you have used Opcom to disable the airbag?  I thought you could?

No, OpCom can only reset the airbag codes.

You need to remove the complete system (and loose the belt tensioners) or fool the unit with a 2.7 Ohm resistor

Like this a lot.

So on mine I could potentially have one button to trigger WMI, one to disable ABS, one for a different map, and one for... an ejector seat  :)
