To be honest, i was pretty impressed by the Miltek NA baffeled box on my stage 2 SC. The jetnoise was interesting, but certainly not drone.

Would get shot to pieces on a stage 3, hence the quest for a stronger baffeled one.

I don't mean to be rude, but little thought goes into the exhaust systems on our cars in general. I have spent an age thinking up better ways of doing things and will be hopefully buying more stuff to build the silencer this week. Will start another thread on the matter, as it will be a biggish and dynamic project as I will test and change ideas depending on the noise levels it makes as I progress. I will publish my pre-post noise tests and what aspects of the design I found worked etc etc.

the biggest hurdle is keeping the exhaust system inside the vx220 exhaust heatshield, this severely restricts the design possibilities.

Therefore most vx220 exhausts look pretty much the same, just a big backbox and a few bends ....

I think there is a bit of scope for some ingenuity and ground up thinking. I have at least 3 new ideas that haven't ever been tried in a VX exhaust as far as I know and it should hopefully all fit in the regular exhaust heat-shielded area (even though all pipework will be 3.5" diameter). This is not to say that it will be a success on noise levels though, or that I even have the metal working skills to make it - we shall see.

Sorry crap photo's, but mine is a 3 inch bore, supplied in 2013 by 2Bular through MMG, with both a decat and cat section.

One design improvement would be to make the cat section bolt in... to remove, you have to decouple a 3 bolt flange, remove 2 x clamps, twist one section out of the way and then wrestle the sleeve joint apart, which is a ball ache to do twice a year!!!

I have a 2.5" system on my 2.2 N/A. The fit was "challenging" 😕.

Not spoke to Jim for some time, really nice guy 😊

Dave H longer back box on the high powered turbo is very civilised and couple of years with no ill effect

Surprised a lot more people have not acquired in of his systems especially with extra quiet option and quality of work

DG

DaveH backbox vs Tubular 3 inch.

Tubular weighed a ton in comparison. All the weight was in the exit pipes.

You can have in sizes to suit volume control, sure that is one of the slightly longer ones

I don't know how to say this without it sounding obtuse which you always accuse me of so I'll just say it. it is difficult to give your post credibility (which you have in many other departments) having seen the many cuts and many welds of the exhaust on your car. It really is very ugly.

I don't think Jim will mind me posting the email exchange I had with him where I said that I didn't mind how much it cost but I needed it to be quieter on the SC. the main reason I don't drive the car on the road much (alright and the exige often wins)

Hello James! Sorry about the delay in getting back to you - it's absolutely crazy out there at the moment and I need to get the order back-log down asap. I think Tullet exhausts are the supplier of choice for the VX220 world now. If you offered that sum of money to them, I'm sure they could build you a proper Z-flow silencer design which would be quieter yet cost very little power - no packing materials to worry about! Double-skinned body with doubled end-plates (voids filled with Acoustafil). I just simply don't have time to work on anything but Lotus at the moment - I do apologise - and do appreciate your persistence. Best Regards, Jim

I appreciated his honesty, I've always found Jim great to deal with. Guess what though tullet were not interested. But that's what you're up against. It has to be a baffled system.

In defence of Nev (yes, really). You're comparing an exhaust he commissioned to his own approach. If the exhaust he is currently running met his needs then he wouldn't be considering anything else so I don't feel it's fair to judge his plans on something he is dissatisfied with.

Additionally, fair play to him for going this far. I bought a welder, thought better of it and sold it. I'm not entirely convinced this is the right approach compared to specifying the design to a fabricator, but time will tell.

It's the widest possible, 28 inches if I remember correctly. I also run an 18inch silencer instead of a cat which helps lower the noise.
