Hi,

I'm new to this forum, having just bought a VX220 this weekend. I noticed the metallic noise on overrun when I got on the motorway - worst in 5th with no revs.

[QUOTE]Graham at Picador, assisted by two workshop guys had this long running problem solved in two minutes - A loose bracket above the ERV

PaulR, can you please elaborate? Was this a fix for 'the noise' or for some other rattle.

On another post someone suggested a sports exhaust to 'mask' the noise. I'll have a loko at the other posts fro some advice.

Other than that I'm delighted!

Cheers,
Lee :)

The car is at the dealership as I type with a long list of things to look at. As soon as I hear, I'll post back the results

caleebra - have you had it checked out ? If so what was said ?

Sorry Paul, missed this! I haven't had it checked out but it does sound like a loose bracket.

Can it be a bracket? The sound is there until: (a) throttle applied, upon which it fades away gradually. (B) throttle dipped, when it goes away immediately. I have been down to Hartwells in Sheffield today but they don't have a VX220 specialist and sais that they had heard of the bracket problem but I'm hoping to find out more tomorrow. Cheers

Can it be a bracket?

I would have thought so, think of the vibration in the engine when you apply throttle from low revs without changing down... If something is loose it will rattle like a biatch. Exhaust manifold is a common one.

I dont know if we're all on about the same noise here though  And I have heard other noises which were definitely clutch release bearing type noises! Fun and games!

I had astrange noise like this on my old NA it also disappeared when I dipped the cluth. On mine itwas the exhaust vibrating against a heat sheild.

OK. I would be happy with a rattle. Trouble is, I can't make the ferkin thing do it whilst stationary. I'll get it over the pit with the bonnet up and have a listen above and below. Thanks for your replies..........I'll see what tomorrow brings and await PaulR's results. :grouphug:

Twice in the same day (see other thread) Does it sound like gravel thrown accross metal sheeting? If so its just transmission noise. You car is so light and nimble because of all the sound deadening they left off when it was built ;)

Leemus you're round the same area as me, take the VX to Perrys of Doncaster, they're a VX specialist and seem to pick up on the issues fairly quicky.

ONly had one hiccup with them regarding an alarm, but problem sorted in the end.

Tell them know it all Louise sent you and watch the fear in their eyes

Gravel on metal....I like it.....probaly the same noise....our mechanics did suggest that it might be unexcluded noise but I wanted to be sure....thanks and I'll keep you posted. Thanks Lousie.....I'll give Perrys a call tomorrow....

Well I got the car back. They didn't sort this metallic sound though. I'm sure it's got worse over the past year. If I go through the gears slowly, I can hear it everytime now. They put some rubber sealant around some joints of the engine hood and I think also around the exhurst manifold. It's back in 2nd August for a few other things they didn't do, and I'm also demonstarting the noise to the engineer hopefully. Don't know if the sound was always there and now I know about it, I'm hearing it all the time. I passed on quite a detailed report or the problems and possible solutions to the engineer, but how knows if he looked at it. Sorry, wish I could have good news !

Hi, Well, we found a rattling heat shield but this wasn't 'the noise'. Removing it cured one rattle (we have this all the time with vectras) but not 'the noise'. We are now certain that it is transmission related. I'll keep looking but if it's something I have to live with then that's fine :) . I spoke to Perrys in Doncaster (thanks Louise) but couldn't get to talk to a VX technician. The service chappie hadn't heard of one being booked in with such a fault.Mebbe I'll run it over. I am going to wait for a pal at the local dealers to return from holiday and let him listen. Other than that, I just spent all day valeting it and it is now mint. roll on the weekend....... Cheers, Lee

As I'm so un-mechanically minded could any tell me if it is the transmission. Are we talking any damage and anything to finally break ? Obviously everything breaks eventually, but I mean sooner than it should ? Will it just get louder and louder ?

A deer with no eyes mate. I'm ordering a vauxhall back box to drown it out. I have noticed that the noise gets louder as the gearbox warms up (it seems to increase more slowly than engine temp because the engine warms up in 10 mins but the noise is defnitely much louder after 30 mins of driving). I'm becoming philosophical.....mebbe I'll just live with it and enjoy the ride.

I started this thread off May last year since when the problem has gone from an accepted fault (which was "rectified" with a new gearbox) to a TADTS when the sound came back after two weeks. My suspicion is that it is more likely to be a linkage rattling than anything wrong with the actual gearbox.

I'm now trying to ignore it and just drive the car. With the roof off you generally can't hear it. With the roof on it's bl**dy annoying - although the creaking from my new roof (that's another story) largely drowns it out.

Fairy snuff. PaulR - did you get any joy this week? Thanks vix. To be honest, I'm so chuffed with the car that I'm just ignoring it. I don't feel so alone now! Lee

The car went in a few weeks ago and had various things done on warranty. Unfortunately, the noice is still there. But I'm having the rear lower suspension (the rods with the bushes) replaced when the parts finally are available. I'm gonna show the mechanic the rattling noice then and see what he thinks. I'll keep you posted, but I bet the parts will take ages to come in (same old "on backorder" quote)
