Got my first track day coming up in the VX220. Thinking about getting a camera so I can record my slow laps etc. No idea which one to get or where and how to mount it. Any suggestions? Would like to create some videos and have an obd11 dongle and Harry's lap time on my phone so hopefully can find a way to merge the two. Again, any suggestions? Thanks for the help.

Have you looked at Torque and track recorder through google play - that works through your smart phone and camera using data from a bluetooth dongle.

Really there are only 3 mounting options :

Harness bar

Windscreen (with adhesive mount)

Rear bulkhead / window (with adhesive mount)

Harness bar is best as it minimizes vibration but I have had good results with a windscreen mount.

You can't use suction mounts on a trackday unless tethered.

Any old generic chinese gopro clone should do you fine, depends if you want to go to 4k quality or not. They will all pretty much do 1080/60 now.

Obviously you will need one that can output its video via the USB to record on the app.

Maybe ask Zoobeef as it looks like he integrates all the data for his trackday vids ?

I am using Gopro Hero session with Harry's Lap timer Pro (multi camera mode) on Iphone 7.

Gopro is stuck to rear windscreen with J mount.

Video quality is great however I am unable to use OBDII WiFi dongle and Gopro simultaneously as iPhone can only connect to one device via WiFi.

No doubt there will be an extortionately priced Apple doodah you can buy. God I hate Apple...!

So Gopro is the favourite then?

I presume with Harrys you wouldn't even need an external camera (go pro) at all ? phone can record video, log OBD/GPS data and merge the two all in one ?

You pay a heavy premium for the full GoPro. The session is better value.

As I say the clones have caught up massively in the last few years. A GoPro Hero 4 Black at £300 might look a -bit- better than a Xiaomi Yi for £60 at 1080p. But we're talking a small difference here!

You've got me sold on the alternatives. I'll look into them. Many thanks

mounting an android phone though to the roll bar and being able to access the touchscreen to set everything to record, a bit of faff?

plus the classic problem of rolling shutter and fast moving video , I have video shot on a gopro from Neils car on the french frolic , and I think the FPS setting is too high as fast driving looks like he is doing 30mph.

harry supports the gopro camera. It can do start/stop via the api or something.

I have not gotten fully into it, but could be what you're looking for.

All others would be manually bodging the data together iirc.

A vote for attaching it on top of the roll bar cover via a suction mount from me. Tethering it to the areial will keep most TDO's happy.

Lol, it's really nothing special. The mount is this suction cup https://www.amazon.c...i_obgZybE87DZ8Y The teather is just a short length of metal cord (like a bike brake/gear cable) with a small loop on one end. One round the mount the other I unscrew the aerial and use the aerial bolt to screw through the loop. https://www.amazon.c...i_VggZyb5F8269E

Looks like your collection google street view data. Seems a bit high for me although you will get good visibility. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Here is my video from earlier today. I think I will reposition GoPro to front windscreen for better picture quality. https://youtu.be/d2tNQelOpHI
