Just wanted to bring this thread back to life. Anyone have anymore updates on best stuff and process on packing there silencer? I find I’m having problems with the packing moving to one side and then the tube falling out. I’m going to buy the zt1 stuff as that seems the best on the market, but what about wire to tie in into the tube? I did find some 1000 degrees yarn which I think might be worth a shot.

Good find. I’m thinking this stuff and the yarn. Anyone see any problems using the yarn?

I know the wire can’t be used as it superheating the packing, which increases the likely hood of burning up the packing material.

It's like the stuff you get on woodburner doors by the look of it. How do you plan on using both? A 200m role should be enough to fill the can!

Good to meet you sat BTW, I was in the yellow vx in the same garage as you at the start of the day.

Good to meet you also 😀
The problem I’m having is the packing slipping off the tube so was wanting to use something tightly wrap it around the packing onto the tube to keep it in place.

That’s where the loose fill stuff rather than webbing that wraps around the tube is easier to use, you just need to make sure that you use the right amount. Pack it too tight and it will be as bad as not packed enough

The loose fill those isn’t rated to 1000 degrees is it?

I doubt it but can’t remember it’s rating, was 4 years ago when I used what was then the latest product so probably around 750deg
It was better than what came out which ended up as congealed marbles. Will be interesting to see what comes out this time when Dan replaces it.

I was commenting on ease of use since trying to wrap a kinked tube then get it back into place is not going to be easy

I've just had to repack my new cat bypass silencer as it came apart at the end of my last track day and then spat it all out.
It was really easy to repack compared to the main pipe because it's straight. I just put the dimensions into the online calculator and cut the sheet, wrapped it around and slipped it in the external shell.

I've used self tappers this time, as hopefully they are more robust as the have a solid core. The rivets where too week. Posted Image

I also had to remove my tips and had a nightmare taking them off as they where so tight and the cuts in the swaged parts weren't long enough. I had them made with 76mm ID which gave no slack (bad move by me). So proper exhaust tips are now ruined as they got badly scraped/damaged trying to get them apart, even with heat on them!

I'm going to take this opportunity to replace the twin tip to a single 3" tip so it will make it easier to put a bolt on external silencer if required. Posted Image

While I had my exhaust off to remove tip, I noticed that I had a hole in my main box. It was from one of the bolt holes where the Repackable main silencer bolts together. When I took it apart originally (3 months ago) one of the nuts on the inside came off (as they are normally welded). As I didn't have the ability to weld SS I put a rivet through it, but this was a 4.8mm rivet in a 6mm hole, so not a great fit, but I thought it would do.

Anyway it didn't, it had come out and blown a quantity of packing out and it is the side which is very close to the perf pipe (as the pipe dog legs). So I had to unbolt it and pull the exhaust apart, repack in the local area and back together.

I will use a rivnut through this hole as its 6mm and then put a bolt through to plug the gap, and just drill out the rivnut when it's repacking time.

I have spent far to much time on this exhaust...................... Posted Image

The more I think about it the more I reckon the loose stuff would be better. It looks like you can pack it very tight with that stuff. Best I’ve found temperature wise is 720 degrees http://www.textilete...er-packing.html if there was a better version out there then this would be perfect.

Be careful though with the loose stuff, even if you can get some where you are happy with the heat rating. All packing material expands so, apparently, if you pack it too tight then you don’t get the maximum noise reduction & it does need to be pretty uniformingly packed along the entire box. I can’t remember exactly why but it is explained somewhere on the net.

I was also advised by a local exhaust builder who specialises in Caterham exhausts that changing the internal tube for a titanium one would help noise reduction. I didn’t take him up on it since I wasn’t convinced that he wasn’t just after a bit of cash but he was insistent that the heat properties of a titanium internal tube would help

Such a crap design these tullet exhausts for packing. I’m woundering if half and half is maybe better. The loose stuff at the bottom on the leg and then 1000 degrees stuff on the straight.

Finally checked my exhaust, the noise was coming from the manifold to downpipe joint as the gasket failed.... won't be using one when it goes back together.
I checked the packing which is the ht acoustafil stuff and is fine which is a bit frustrating for me as one of the bolts sheared off the can so now need to buy a rivnut tool.
Might as well repack it while it's open as well.
