Looking for opinions on how to improve my brakes on track (without budget going out the window!).

Currently I have RS42 on standard discs and they are great for 3 laps or so, then they start to lose a bit of bite (going from face ripping off to merely good). When this happens I get a funny noise like a scrabbling noise. I suspect the discs are getting hot. Pedal feel is fine, I'm confident the fluid is OK as I change every year.

So, would I notice much improvement with the all out track pads like RS14, RC6, PF etc, or is the problem that standard discs can't cope? I don't fancy the idea of blowing £600 on discs as an experiment!

Standard discs are up to the job for RS14 etc It's when you start producing far to much heat the pads don't last long So just try the pads and see how you get on If you are running through pads at a rediculas rate like me you need to seriously think about some high quality high priced discs £600 for a set of discs won't be enough if you get to this point

I've been quoted £1600 for a set of bells and rotors But just waiting for someone to get some miles on them to prove them first

Thanks - never had a problem with longevity, my front discs need doing soon and they must have done 15+ track days.

OK, so spoke to Matt Bentley and he recommended PF11s or RS14s.

RS14s are now £400 on Eliseparts  whereas Performance Friction are around £300. Anyone have any experience with these, or know an alternate (cheaper) supplier?

I think Wrightstuff uses PF pads on track and really rates them but not sure which model.

I switched to Carbon Lorraine before the National.  After a chat with the distributor I bought CL8s.  A sensational pad. Certainly superior to any Pagid I've used (most of them) and the PFs they replaced.  Not cheap, but a clear demonstration that if the pads are right, you don't need to upgrade the hardware.

Consistent retardation to the tyre adhesion threshold, without excessive pedal force.

I never got to terms with rs14's and rc6 was a match made in heaven for me. Others seem to do just as fine with the 14's, so part seems personal preference. For me the instant bite from rc6 works very trustworthy.

PF11 fronts and PF08 rears, they've always been very good. Sadly you can't get the PF01s any more, the stopping power on those was brutal. Mike and Jimmy both won time attack on PFs, so that has to be some kind of endorsement!

But time and technology marches forwards...Partridge above said he thinks the RC8s are superior to the PF's and I've heard only good things about RC6s so maybe I'll give those a try next time.

Leaning towards PF, they are apparently the regulation pad in Elise Trophy, and if good enough for Mike and Jimmy...

The RS14's seem to work well on track and road without the corrosive dust you get with some pads. Although when the discs got hot I had rummbly brakes - possibly from pad deposits. Brake coolers and grooves discs have helped but not solved this. So they're not perfect. Anyone got thought on whether the CL and PF are usable on the road? Personally I didn't like the CL6 for road use - they needed warming up more than the pagids. Anyone tried the mintex 1166? Should be up to the job and the price is below the pagids... but I suspect poor cold performance.... Too many choices and full of compromises if using for road and track!

PFs aren't great from cold, in fact the very first stamp on the pedal is atrocious.

After a few stamps they're fine.

Dust is a lot more manageable and comes off easy with WonderWheels with no bodywork staining. The old PF01 pads were molten evil and ruined your wheels.

I sometimes get a tiny bit of rubbing/squeal on the fronts when not braking but that could be my caliper.

I've found this so now I have two sets and switch the track bias stuff back in when needed. Its a really quick jobs so no real downsides!

42s don't cut it on track.  I was surprised how well the CL8s worked from cold.  I'd have no problem using them on the road (apart from the expense  )

Yeah RS42 ok but just not man enough on the front if you're a late braker. When they fade if I press the pedal harder it just starts to lock the rears instead.
