Hi- advice if you please. I've had the vx for around 2 years now and loved every minute. I've had 'slight play in steering' on the previous 2 MOT tests as an advisory. I hadn't noticed it at all and it drives spot on. When stationary the steering wheel does move slightly left to right without moving the wheels. Last year the mot garage said they couldnt check it further without removing the undertray but as it hadn't failed they didnt investigate further. Any ideas? Mine did that for a while, got worse and worse and I ended up getting the steering rack refurbished. Cost was around 200 if I recall.

There are no trays that cover any part of the steering so don't go there again.

Get your head under the dash and have a look at the UJs. See if the bottom of the column as it goes through the bulk head moves exactly as you wiggle the wheel. If not then see which UJ the play is in. If it does then jack it up and see if the play is in the track rod ends.

If its not there then it's in the ineer joint cups or the pinion were the column meets the rack.

Get a new garage!

All I would add to the young lad above, is that if you lack the night vision of a trained killer, when inverted in the footwell, I slide my finger down the potentially loose parts of the bottom UJ while rocking the wheel.  I can feel the movement better than I can see it (which I often can't).

Mine had this mentioned for the first time this past MOT. After a quick look I couldnt find anything wrong so I did some searching on here and remembered about the steering rack bush issue that makes a knocking noise but doesnt cause any issues. I think thats what they heard on mine and mentioned it as steering play. Mine defo has the steering rack knock noise but no adverse effects or excessive play.

Thanks all. I'll take it for the test and see if it's still advisory or a fail and then start touching up the steering column Then! I'm assuming you can buy steering columnn joints etc separately then and it's not just a column or a rack? Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

Nice one. It looks like it is the joint between the bulkhead and under the car. Is the kit 1 a single joint, kit 2 joint and pole, kit 3 2 joints and pole? Sorry to be so stupid....im quite handy at fitting though! Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

Yes you are correct. Chances are your current ones just need tightening up rather than replacing though.

Something to be aware of - I bought that kit, but in my column the 'joining rod' is not welded to the bottom joint.  I can't recall how it works, but I think the top joint has a larger aperture to accommodate the steering column (steady Steve!), so only fits at the top.  If your bottom UJ is not welded, that kit may not suit.

I may however be talking bollox.

I've done some inverted action this morning and tightened everything but the play is still there. I. More inclined to Think it feels like the bottom joint so I'm going to order the one, try that and see if that works. Mot is Tuesday..... Sent from my SM-G955F using Tapatalk

Pessimist's question : what's the worse that happens in real life? And how can you tell when the time for seeing if it gets worse is past?

The car will tend to wander in the road. And will wander more the worse it gets.

Ok, I asked for that 😊 What was the stage before said crash? Did you have wandering as well?
