Hmm, I'm not sure I'd agree with that, over time I've found myself wishing I had lower gearing myself, especially 3rd, 4th and 5th as I can't realistically use 5th unless I am just cruising.

If you imagine the VXT was geared for something like 155 MPH at 5500 RPM, then obviously if you engine now revs to 8000 then the top speed (which is unrealistic) is circa 200 MPH... hence its the wider rev range that mandates a narrower set of top gears( 3rd,4th & 5th) IMO.

The 4.17 gearbox in george's car runs out of revs at 135 mph He was banging the limiter at spa and think he said he was on the limiter at silverstone but I suppose it's what you want

Do you know what his rev limit set at?

Seeing as he has an Adaptronic ECU he could just plug a laptop in and raise it a bit (assuming it's mapped it at those revs).

I can understand you might think that, but my 18" wheels don't lengthen my gearing (as I have 30% profile rear tyres). They are the same rolling circumferance as OEM within about 3mm.

A cheap "upgrade" since ever. :) There are plenty available at break yards and a direct swap. Nice for nuts driving with high rpm N/A, increases acceleration, but then I have a problem on highways. Don't want to cruise with 5000> rpms noise. I'd need a long overdrive option just for that. (M32 option seems nice only on paper, compared to F23 it's quite fragile).

if you fitted new bearings and then used 3 litres of oil it should be fine, plenty of high powered z20leh cars using the M32.

The problem was the 6th gear bearing ran dry and thus collasped, plus they don't like 'dumping the clutch' to do burn outs - like some FWD drivers seem to enjoy

If you only want to do 135 in a VXT then just leave it in 4th

Are you planning on doing anything to the Zafira box once you source it. Change the selectors, check synchro or bearings?

Wow, turned out to be a hot topic!

My own NA F23 is in good shape (and already has the Quaife), so just getting it looked over whilst installing the new 4.17 final drive (now sourced, thanks Mark!!!!!)

The secret's out now i guess, i'm dropping a mad C20xe in my VX, so need as much help as possible to keep the revs up!!!!!

4.17 should JUST about do it.

Some further research shows that there was a 4.41 final drive available in the states, so i'm looking into it...

An M32 sounds ideal / best of both worlds.

Is it a big Faff to install?
