Hi guys,

I just wanted to run my plans past you guys to get your advice. I'm currently building a very mildly tuned engine to replace my current one that is burning a little more than acceptable amount of oil. I’m not after anything too serious I’m just trying to do all the small mods that refine the engine a little. So here is the plan so far as well as the usual rebuild.

- balance shaft delete - Lightened flywheel - 1mm skim on the head to raise the cr to 11:1 - Fit a 2.4 manifold (any for sale?) - cutting some of the baffles out my milltech - 200 cell sports cat - k&n induction system - EGR delete

Is there anything else that is worth doing while the engine is in bits? Also i was wondering how much the ecu self-adjust by?

Thanks for your help in advance guys.

Chris

i have a lightened flywheel and fast road clutch kit for sale if its any good to you :)

i would also fit a 4-1 manifold as this usually adds a nice bit of torque, also if you want optimum gain then fit obdtuners.

the ecu is meant to self adjust to 20% i think

Without a remap or OBDT, any gains will be very minimal tbh..

Thanks batman but I already have a lightened flywheel on my other engine so I’ll just change it when I swap the engine but cheers.

I’ve had a look at fabricating my own manifold but I’m struggling to find a stainless manifold flange anywhere, I may end up sending a gasket off and getting one cut but I my just do that later on.

I’ve been looking at obd tuner tonight in a little more detail and I’m pretty impressed. I didn’t realise you could do so much with it and it was so easy. Only thing I can’t seem to find is a price

Add electric water pump to that list and it will rev really nice i reckon. How about porting the head if your having it off anyway?

I'll have a look into the water pump and see what's involved cheers. I asked my machinist guy about porting it but we pretty much decided it wasn't worth doing unless I cammed it as well, plus he has a massive waiting list for stuff like that

Usually, people with a massive waiting list are biased.... It is worth doing.

Thanks for the advice guys, the porting I was 50/50 on but at the moment I'm just after a engine to tide me over while I get a few other car projects out the way. And again throttle bodies is probably a bit too much hassle at the moment. If the other engine is ok when I take it out I'll likely build that into a purpose built supercharged setup but that's well down the line

You can port the head with a dremel and the small sanding drums DIY. It takes a long time but the slow removal of material means much less chance of removing too much. There are loads of threads on www.z22se.co.uk but not sure how many pic survived. Concentrate on the exhaust ports. I would do the head and exhaust manifold and leave the back box alone.

Yup, exhaust side porting only. You can/should remove obvious visible casting flaws from the intake, but other then that the intake side is fine.

I've got an exhaust-only ported head pushing over 350 on a 2.0...

With the mods you are thinking of a remap will be very important. The self learning of the std ECU cant handle such big hardware changes. I would recommend OBD Tuner if you are thinking of going SC at a later date, as it will work out cheaper than 2 separate maps and the maps will be better.
