Hi all,

Looking for some advice please. I'm getting my VX back on the road after working overseas for a couple years, and everything was fine when I fired it up but now the engine is running rough.

To start with it was a bit intermittent, now it's constant so I've stopped using the car in case it causes any more problems.

Idle is low and lumpy between 800-900, sometimes dropping down to 500-600. Seems smoother with a bit of throttle and revs up higher but hard to say without driving it.

My first thought was the vacuum hose as it had never been done, but I replaced that yesterday and it's no better...

Could it be fuel pump or EGR? Or is it more likely the timing chain has jumped a tooth? (Also never been done - car is an 02 with 50k miles).

Is there any way to check these before committing to buying parts etc?

Any help or advice massively appreciated, just want to get back out driving the damn thing!

(Edit: should also add I replaced the battery terminals the other day, if this could be an electrical issue)

Is there any way that can be tested to make sure it's the issue?

blanking plate it off , and pivot the actuator away on one bolt, but leave it plugged in

Update: pulled the EGR valve off... lots of built up carbon sitting exhaust side and smaller pieces blocking the valve open. Cleaned the valve and exhaust side build up and car is running perfectly. One of the EGR bolts snapped but a small price to pay.

Thanks siztenboots for the tip!
