After 13 years in my tubby it finally let me down at the road side today for the first time. Cruising speed and felt sudden loss of power, tried to accelerate but kept slowing down until I came to a halt.
Pulled over and checked for any loose hoses, couldn’t see anything. Left it for half hour and tried to start it, would turn over but then just conk out.
Decided only option was RAC, £125 lighter and 90 minutes lately guy turns up ( I’m praying he’s at least seen one of these before!) As it happens he’s worked on one previously and diagnoses fault pretty quickly. Intercooler clip had come loose and disconnected intercooler. To be fair the guy was sound and had it back up and running within 20 minutes so although out of pocket I was just glad it was nothing serious and could drive it home .
Stay safe everyone.

I have been out in the Vx today for the first time since the intercooler clip came loose. I have noticed the turbo whoosh from the right side behind me is sounding like a hissing noise and louder than before. I do have an apexi induction kit so am used to the noise but this is definitely louder. It seems to increase in noise around the 3-3.5k rpm but was too worried to push it much past that after what happened last time I was out in the car. I presume this is a related issue and Potential boost leak. Any advice or pointers on what to look for to diagnose would be much appreciated.

It should be louder on the passenger side as that’s where the filter is.
I got the same filter and it’s very whoosh anyway.

Take the rear wheel off (drivers side) remove the arch liner and just make sure the bottom hose is connected correctly and the top hose to intercooler is pushed all the way on.

Put some fairly liquid around the seals to the intercooler and start the engine. Look for bubbles.
Must be small as if you pop a hose ( I have) the car won’t idle and stalls unless you disconnect the MAF.

Cheers for the pointers, I was just very reluctant to increase the revs today as that’s what happened when the intercooler clip came loose. When the RAC guy put the clip back on and got me back once on the road he assured me that it was tight and wouldn’t come off again so I might be just be being a little paranoid.

If it comes off again and won’t idle discounted the MAF, pull the connector out that power it and it will run.
Drive it close to home, give it beans if the blows off, disconnect as above and it will drive it home off boost.

Reconnect the maf and reconnect the hoses. Then use some better clips

Mine kept blowing off as I didn’t have the hose far enough on the alloy pipe.
