In the struggle to find OEM badges to rebadge mine I'm considering ways to reproduce something that looks somewhat close to OEM and wanted to gauge interest here? As far as I can tell online, apart from a couple of extortionate ebay listings they arent available anywhere.

Are many of you going unbadged because finding them is nigh on impossible and expensive, or just you prefer it?

Theres 3 options as far as I can tell :

- Source some original badges, 3D scan and resurface them and then stick the model somewhere anyone can download it and 3D print them (if it costs a fortune to get hold of the badges then I'd probably charge a few quid for the model to recoup the cost)

- Source orignals again, make some silicone molds and resin cast new copies. Obviously repeat at cost for anyone that might want them.

- If there are literally none to be had on the face of the earth, take some dims and images and 3D model them totally from scratch to be 3d printable. I'm mostly capable of doing this although I'd rather not!

Does anyone have any knocking about that they would be willing to part way with or know somewhere I dont to find them? or failing that anyone near Leamington spa with some I could take a mold of/scan?

Cheers

I have a brand new OEM 'VX220'.  I won't post it for fear of it going missing but I'll loan it (for free) if you want to scan it on condition it comes back 'as is'.  I won't sell it.

Updating this thread as I've made some progress on rebadging to near OEM without buying extortionately priced bits of GM plastic off ebay and thought it might be a good option for anyone else that wants to do the same.

I realised that trying to reproduce or model up the Griffin emblems to any decent quality was more effort than it's worth, so I've found some emblems from other Vauxhall's that are pretty close.

The rear Griffin from an Astra H (2004, part no. GM93191551) is 111mm in diameter, the original VX220 one is apparently 100mm, so it's it's a little bigger but pretty close, looks proportionally okay in my eyes, and more importantly is easily available new for a tenner. It can cope with the bend in the middle as that Astra also had a Centreline crease down the boot lid.

The front Griffin from a Vectra C (2002, no part number handy but a search brings them up easily) is the exact same diameter as the VX220's original emblem (90mm) but is domed and doesn't have the correct pin to fix to the front. To fix it in place, I've broken off or sanded back the pins on Vectra badge, and then with a bit of 3M tape carefully cut, or just some flexible glue, it will stick down. Because of the domed-ness of it, the top and bottom don't sit flush on the roundel in the V and the middle wants to lift, but something sticky should hold it. It might fall off but these are also available for £5 so I'll get another one and try again..

I can get a link to some pictures if anyone is interested, otherwise I'll be trying to find the best way of getting a VX220 emblem for the back reproduced and report back with that.

Here is a German new one.

If you could clone it undamaged, you should be able to get a decent price for it after the reproduction.

Not wishing to be a sour puss, but aren't there copyright issues wrt copying someone's work, in the case vauxhall?

Potentially, although there seems to be hoards of badges, emblems and stickers for sale which use the VX220 text logo on them, and the actual emblem appears to be long out of production now too.

I'm not sure how generics get round patent / copyright issues but it clearly isn't an issue somehow.  if the car co's chased this down there would be no pattern parts.

The surface finish i'm getting with my nephew's £150 3D printer is not really good enough if you want a OEM-look badge. We made a Lotus 7 front badge on it and it was good at 3 feet, but not close up.
If you only need to pass the 'at a distance' test 3D printing is fine.

For the second one we made we added 0.4mm to the top and 0.4mm to the visible outer edges (thats around a pass of filament's thickness), then sanded it down.
We primed it and then used Plastikote Chrome paint, buiding up thin coats, and it looked fantastic.

There's no reason you could not do the same for a VX220 or a Griffin badge, although the new style Griffin would be a lot easier to detail than the old style and your finger tips would thank you for the reduced sanding.

In my opinion the new Griffin is more in keeping with the VX220 design langauge, although that's always going to be subjective. If I was re-badging i'd create the new Griffin.

The job would be: Take a 2D Griffin into CAD, extrude it into 3D, use the CAD features to bevel the rear to fit the body, print oversize, sand it smooth and then paint.

The same principle could probably be used for replacement trim pieces. Or brake ducts. Or LED fog light surrounds. Or dashboard sat-nav holders.
Oh my!

Nice work man. It's not the Griffin I need, it's just the vx220 badge is my X has lost its bottom half.
Do you have the CAD file you could send me for the VX as my mate as a really good 3D printer and could probably help out. It would be massively appreciated

Gav,
i'm sorry I don't - i've never needed to do this.
That was how i'd do it, if I were to do it.

If you want a Lotus 7 badge for it though I can help out......

Think that was Jacob Wright printing the badges, or least the VX220/Speedster and some custom ones too.

I think he's sniffing glue if he thinks anyone would pay £120 for a bit of plastic. I could buy a 3d printer and make endless ones for about the same price :-)

That seller is not targeting the UK market, but the German one.

It's a different price game over there.
