ordered and received a Quaife LSD in the mail today. I have to thank Ian (Cyberman) chinky chinky for the great support "on site" he offered me, arranging in my behalf the deal with Quaife, and greatly easing up the pain of dealing with a slow-responding company from abroad.... B) shipment was fast, 2 days. the part looks the biz, soon I will install it and let you guys know how it performs... Cyberman reports good thing about it, so I have good hopes that it will be able to rein it all those SC extra-ponies... :)

495£ + vat (if not exempt) and shipping.
I feel its a must when power climbs above 200hp.
I currently spin inside wheel on all slow/medium corners, even in 3rd gear +yoko 048... not to mention at the ring....quite frustrating at times....

Glad it arrived safely Ricky. Quaife are OK once you can get hold of them. Being polite doesn't cut it: grabbing them by the ear when they are not looking seems to be necessary. BTW Quaife had 10 of the F23 ATB in stock when I spoke to them (their part F17B). They may have had them on the shelf a while as they were asking whistfully about the prospect of selling some more. I didn't pursue it but I bet they might be open to a discounted deal for more than one. Mick Oakley is the man in the sales department who deals with this. Everybody knows I think its the best mod I've made to my VXT. If you have the extra boost of a Stage 3 I suggest its more than useful. Regards - Ian

Ricky, do you have enough negative travel on your rear wheels? Should be about 50 - 60 mm measured on the wheel.

Ian, how does it feel to drive? Is it more tricky when it breaks away, or more consistent? I would guess you notice it hanging on for longer before the wheels start to spin under power?

I would guess you notice it hanging on for longer before the wheels start to spin under power?

There are both grossly obvious effects and quite subtle unexpected effects. However, in summary, it makes the car more predictable to drive and a good deal less likely to bite you when you least expect it.

Frinstance: there were two nasties with my car before the LSD came to stay: breaking away a single rear wheel under power and locking up the NSR wheel under braking. Both of these *can* be nasty if the road surface is against you (spinning wheel grabs surface and rotates vehicle around front wheels - locked rear slews sideways). These don't happen anymore. I reckon the first of these is the most common cause of single vehicle VX shunts - mainly because it rotates so fast most don't have a cat's chance in hell of catching it.

With the LSD, if you break the rear wheels away (which takes more power) they go together and there is no significant torquing effect as both wheels are rotating at the same speed. In a straight line you may fishtail but its nice and progressive and driveable on full power - well you may have to control wheelspin in first but whether you do or not its driveable if you can afford the rubber. With rotation the tail tends to come out / round progressively and gives plenty of time to respond with and to a lift-off or oppy lock. There seems to be more drag on the rear when sideways with both wheels in the same mode. I think it makes the car more steerable on the throttle.

Others have said it introduces more understeer. I don't agree although that may be because I have the Scared Stiff geometry set-up. It doesn't cure the understeer issue though and, as you can put confidently put more power down in medium speed corners, it may feel as if there is more understeer as the front just pushes out on you even more. I don't think its any worse.

Basically, every time you do a damn fool thing, spin a wheel on a wet white line, hit some water at speed on the motorway and do a little acquaplaning, it can save your life by a) making the threshold higher before you lose the rear B) making the rear more predictable and more controllable once lost.
To me it makes the car more pleasant to drive.

I would caution that it doesn't eliminate the need for controlled driving in the wet. I have found that big BMWs and other bourgemobiles with LSDs AND traction control can be just as fast on the wet roundabout and if you push it too far there you are backing off as the tail comes out while they pee off into the distance. But the tail comes out in a friendly sort of way and no Armco is made nervous by it. This is something I am pondering on as being peed on by bourgemobiles irritates me.

BTW, your front splitter, did you have it done in carbon fibre / honey comb or is it solid? I am looking for someone to make me a very stiff composite splitter and I need to find a suitable fabricator.

Regards - Ian
