Been looking on www.eliseparts.com and they do a Harness bar for an S2 for 111 GBP. Thinking of getting it but just wondering if anyone has put wrap round harnesses on standard seats and cut through the standard seat? How much modifying do they need? Cheers Jay

You need to do a search for this. There's a long thread/discussion/argument I think between barrybethel and thorney on the merits and safety of using harnesses with the standard seat.

Frogman/Tadpole on this site also offer seat cut-out conversions. See [HERE].

Yep, this has been done in the UK and Germany. If you do a search, put in Frogman or Tadpole as a member posting about it – not that expensive either, IIRC.

Last month I put a Moto-Concept bar in my VX...

I had a look at Elise's bar first (as we have many Elise in the 1-11 club), but none were a straight fit (there is no bolt thread in the VX's rollbar, Elise has them )...

Here it is :

In fact the bar as been slightly modified at its ends (to avoid rotation) by welding a "L" shaped plate (here is right side) :


(Note: the bar was 3-4 mm too short !!!)

As for the harnest, it is not warp round the bar as you then must* cut out the seats and my body size doesn't made this possible (too tall). I just used "oeillets" (in french, doesn't know the word in english ). The bar was a apin in the *ss to drill...

When the work was finished (welding, drilling) the bar was painted to a nicer color than the original !
Many thanks to the body shop owner where everything was done...

Foxy, that's correct, it was chopped at each end then made to suit.

IIRC Thorney is in the process of sorting a vx harness bar out. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong but I believe there have been a load of issues due to 'not insubstantial variation in manufacturing tolerences' in the construction of the vx roll bar.

Harness bars are reasonably easy to sort, just hack up an S2 one, but it needs fitting into the car on a car by car basis which is a PITA for most people. We've developed a simple bolt in version but they've not arrived as yet.

any news on bars yet? will it use bolt on harnesses, as i understand that when using bolted ones the standard seats can be used safely?

The hard thing is the legal bit. I've sorted a harness bar but to supply one means a pretty high level of liability insurance (I'm not sure if other suppliers have this, I would hope they do). I have £2m of PL cover but am sorting £10m of cover to supply 'safety' equipment which a harness bar comes under. I'm sorting it soon.

Would insurancecompanys like it better if everyone wanting a harnessbar and race harness would bould it them selfs??? (thinking about building one myself, but would rather buy a new one that fitts)

The issue is a lot more complicated than that I'm afraid. If you have one fitted, are the fitters qualified to install safety equipment into the car? Has the bar been tested to crash protection levels? What material is a it made from? Has the angle been measured correctly with harness's? What harness have been installed? Are they correct for the car? All these apply to all the parts I've developed and for the most part the maunfacturers indemnify me as a retailer by their own internal risk assessment (Oz, AP etc all cover their own parts). However, I've yet to find a supplier who will say (legally) that they will stand by their harness bar in the event of an accident. Personally that scared me enough to look into it further and hence this is the delay. Look at it this way, if you came up with a harness bar and it sheered in the event of an accident and someone died due to you making it for sale what would YOU do? I'm not about to risk everything to rush a product out into the market so I can make £20 a go. I'm not saying what is out there is dangerous (I use one myself) but if they won't stand by the product (legally) then more needs to be done before I'll supply it.
