Everything's detectable. For starters, they could measure the power output on a rolling road, which would be a pretty clear sign. Or they could read the ECU flash memory and compare it to a stock ECU.
It's very unlikely they'd bother though, but if you cause an accident that costs them several million or something, they might start investigating ways of getting out of it a bit more thoroughly. [/quote]
just spoke to my insurance company told them i planned a ECU remap in the near future and was told that as long as the ECU unit wasnt broken open im still covered as long as i keek them imformed. Geoff.

Well a TMS stage 1 remap is 150 bhp, standard is 145 bhp so that's less than 10% ...I said it would be about 20bhp so I guess this is just over 10%
Did you do this online ? Did you select 0-10% increase or 10% + ??
TMS Re-Map (Stage 1) - Increase of £593paÂÂ![]()
Given up on the idea now, certainly until I change insurer next year![]()
I had a milltek and stage 2 which is supposedly 160 bhp. If 145 bhp + 10% = 159.5 bhp then I reckon that it fit's the <10% bracket because the milltek must provide more than the remaining .5 bhp... so by my reckoning the remap itself is less than 14.5 bhp .. does that make sense ?

I think the VXT re-map (Stage 1) takes it up to 240bhp so I guess that is /grabs calculator/...20%!Well a TMS stage 1 remap is 150 bhp, standard is 145 bhp so that's less than 10% ...

Ironically if the chip made a slightly lower increase in power I'd be more likely to get one

Driving around with undeclared mods is like driving around with no insurance - and paying for the privilege.I know there will be those who frown but if it's just a remap no ones ever going to know. Yes there maybe ways of finding out but no insurance company is going to go to that extent. Why would they even consider that your car may have been remap?
As far as visible mods then thats another matter...however I know someone who wrote thier car off and had neglected to inform the insurance company about several highly visable mods and there was no mention of them. A full and generous pay out was made.

Much as I hate to give insurance companies more money I'd have to agree.Driving around with undeclared mods is like driving around with no insurance - and paying for the privilege.I know there will be those who frown but if it's just a remap no ones ever going to know. When I crashed my MX5 i was very glad I'd declared the (mazda optional) alloys as NU were trying everything in their power to wriggle out of bits of the claim. To the extent that I had to speak to Mazda to prove they were options and not aftermarket.

My upcoming re-map is only going to add £45 to my policy so it would seem silly not to declare it and risk them not paying out.

I might be wrong, but I'm pretty sure the small print on 99% of all policies says they'll take the money for you declaring mods but will replace them with standard parts.if your mods are declared and car is damaged then they should cover the cost of putting it back to as it was with mods

Wheether they always stick to the letter of the policy on this I'm not sure (NU replaced one alloy for me) but one of the main reasons for me moving from Elephant to Greenlight / Highway was they they replaced the mods with like-for-like.

Plus TMS stage 2 on NA was an extra £50pa with Bell direct

Just changed to Green Light myselfYup, most mainstream insurers don't do like-for-like replacement - another benefit of Greenlight
