Just booked my first trackday with Motorsprt Events, and they asked me to confirm my exhaust is less than 100db. I said it was, without really knowing, so just how loud does your exhaust have to be to exceed 100db  , louder than a VSE  , 100db seems quite a lot to me. BTW, I have a Milltek & ITG on mine :) Steve

The searches I did suggested a VSE was around 98 - I'm hoping it's less than 100, or I'm in trouble!

The sound a VSE makes as it gets older changes too. Mine sounds very different to framauro's almost-new one and I think it's a bit louder too.

Sounds ace, but I've never taken it on track to test any of this...

i think the milltek is designed to be 'track friendly' at about 95db

When competeing a few weekends ago. Noise tests were carried out on all cars. My VXT with full miltek gave a noise of 75db at 4000 revs. So not sure where they take the 105 limit from or hill climbs in the middle of no where dont have the same issues. But single seaters and some westfields have some mega noise off the line.

Steve....it might be worth nipping down to Goodwood on 19th June (Monday)..... there is a track day on.

You may be able to get it tested there if you talk nicely to one of the marshalls/organisers. Not sure but might be worth a go.

Tell them your thinking of tracking at Goodwood and want to be sure your not over the limit - I think they have one of the strictest noise limits there.

I'm not sure if your 100db limit is drive by or static might also make a difference

Dave

***I'm sure Maplins sell a sound meter for about £30 or nearer £55?***

or here a bit cheaper <might do the trick>

If you're really worried about it (I wouldn't be personally) then you can hire a noise meter from Bookatrack.com for £9 inc P&P both ways, be real careful how you measure though MSE event will almost certainly be a static reading and 100db is incredibly loud for a static reading, surprisingly a lot of the static noise on cars comes from rattles around the engine not the exhaust itself - this is especially the case on bike engined things. Driveby failures aren't normally down to the exhaust either it is induction noise (unless you have a monster deafening Regal thing on)

It's always confused me. I was tested (static) at Bedford at 99 once. The next time I went (after replacing the induction kit with a standard paper filter) I measured 105. They then retested 10 seconds later at 100.5. However, I was giving full beans all day and had no driveby probs whereas a guy in a VXT with full Milltek (supposedly quiet) and no induction tripped the driveby limit and got blackflagged. All seems a bit random to me

I'm not too concerned TBH, because it's an exponential scale 100db is MUCH louder than the 95db quoted by DanVXT. The ITG does start to "roar" from 3.5k rpm, but I should be ok....

You should be fine - mine's about as loud as a Milltek with ITG, and measures about 95db in static tests and has never tripped a drive by meter. If you do have trouble with the drive bys, you just have to figure out where to lift a bit ;)

I think it all depends if the guy holding the sound meter farts as he takes the reading. ;)

...I've been putting this off for far too long. 100db is a bit louder than 99db, but not as loud as 101db  hope that helps thumbsup

Steve,

I have moved from owning a very loud track prepared Evo (which regualrly failed noise tests) to a VXR. My VXR has a Miltek on it and got tested at Bedford last week. Static test was 95Db @ 4,500 revs. This will pass EVERY track in the UK, to my knowledge.

100Db on a static test is VERY loud. My Evo had a 3" straight through Magnex exhaust on it which wouold just pass a 100Db static test (such as at Castle Combe) but I would then most likely get pulled up on drive by. This happens regularly at Bedford (and Goodwood and Castle Combe), where most people who fail have passed tghe static test but fail the drive by.

You will be fine, no worries.

Just found this thread :beat: MSE do a static test at 3/4 revs (4,500rpm) at approx 1 metre from the exhaust. I've got the full Miltek and at Keevil I sailed through it. IIRC they recorded me at something around 87Db. I was quite disappointed it wasn't louder :( :D

I have a VSE and Viper and have just done a 'silent' track tray at Donnington. I was really worried, but my car was just about the quietist there. Shamone

Just done Abingdon with MSE. My car has a Miltek cat back and a Courtenay silencer and as 98.4. A guy who was also there (Dodge on this site) has a full Miltek which was notably quieter. I have no dount you'll be fine. Martin s
