Recently I noticed the biting point on my clutch starts about 3/4 of they way up. As of yet I have not experienced any clutch slipping when driving hard. Does this mean the clutch needs re-adjusting or is it on it's way out? I have only owned the car for 2 months. It was purchased from a main dealer with 1 year warranty. Will it be covered under warranty and if not, do I need to re-mortgage the house :o to fork out for a new clutch + fitting?

As far as I can remember, if you bought it from Vauxhall and it is a NetworkQ car, then the clutch is covered.

Someone mentioned something about air in the hydraulic clutch system before - if that is the case then its a relatively easy problem to fix. It does make you ask why it might have got air in the system in the first place though...

the biting point on my clutch is at the top of the pedal, i thought this was the norm - im not to bothered, just means i only have to dip the cluth to change gear rather than pushing it all the way down.....get a faster gear change :P

I asked the same question when I got my N/A last year the car is an 03. It is still the same a year later with no sign of slip and apparently there is no way to adjust it unless you remove the clutch? So hopefully nothing to worry about. :D Thorney said many of the VXR 220 are like this. Cheers Oakmere

I have a VXR 13k on the clock and it bites at the top. I have been told it is on the way out but it is still hanging in there. And yes I do use the car away from the lights that's half the fun of it, but it has not done track days.

Does sound like its on the way out but they can last a long time like that so I wouldn't panic yet.

Thorney What does a replacement clutch cost including fitting? I know it ultimately depends on use, but for a typical road driven VX NA, have you got any idea of what sort of mileage you could expect out of a clutch? Thanks thumbsup

It's a lot of labour, and I've heard figures of £1200-1300 incl parts :huh: Do a search, though, as I am sure this has been discussed previously.

we renewed our AA cover this week, mainly because of a nice 50% discount through work (Thanks Henry!) whilst i was going through the motions with the sales bloke he offered me some *extra* cover which was basically £500 towards any work that had to be done on the car in the event of a breakdown, it cost an extra £65 but after finding out it covered the cost of a replacement clutch i thought it was possibly money well spent! All they ask is that the car's service history is kept up to scratch in accordance to the owners manual, so if you think maybe your clutch or anything else major is on its way out i'd suggest looking into this! who know's it could save you a few quid ;)

Thanks Framauro, I have searched before but never came up with the goods. Maybe I searched for the wrong words, but 'clutch, cost, price, replacement' seemed like a good idea to me! :wacko:

The AA thing is very interesting, as is my network Q warranty..

There doens't seem to be a set mileage, I've just delivered a 48k miles VXR220 with a stage 3 kit and 250bhp back to a member here and he's on the original clutch and its working perfectly normally. Last week we warranty approved a VXR220 with a new clutch as it only had 1k miles on it and was screwed (no signs of abuse). Next week we're doing 2 VXR220's with clutches, one is a stage 4 car with 300llb's of torque and needs the upgrade as its killed the clutch the other is a bog stock VXR220 with 3000 on the clock and the clutch is in a worse state. We're hoping the latter will be covered under warranty but we're only allowed to inspect to see if there are signs of abuse or not - if there are then its not covered.

If there was a set mileage/age then it would be clearer but seems to us that it just luck of the draw.

Cost wise, to replace like for like you're looking at about £1400, to upgrade to a high performance one att another £200 and to replace with a lightened flywheel as well (good idea) add another £300 onto that. These are give or take figures, all depends on time taken and sometimes its quicker than then and hence cheaper.

Monday, Tuesday and Wed we've got 2 side by side for the same work I'll post up what we find if you like?

That would be interesting for most of us I think thumbsup Mine is a standard NA with 40k, the clutch doesn't slip but it feels different to anything else I've driven (admittedly nothing else was like the VX), so I wonder if it's just typical of the car. Interested to hear the results you get anyway. I'm assuming those are +VAT prices.. :unsure:

To replace an NA VX clutch? Surely can't be £1,200. That's scary. I've done 70K now on mine. No signs of slippage yet, touch formica. but then i now drive like bitch (getting 35K miles out of last set of front tyres)

Yes why is it that expensive when a clutch is only a couple of hunderd quid, call it 300 for the clutch, at £50 an hour labour thats 22 hours labour. please expalin

It's a clam off, engine out job. I've heard 12 hours of labour mentioned before. £50/hour is very cheap to be honest, you'd be lucky to find that rate from a VX specialist, and even luckier to get that from a Vauxhall dealership.

12 hours @ £65/hour = £780
parts @ £300 (your estimate, it could be more)

subtotal = £1080

VAT = £189

Total = £1269

So an estimate of £1200 isn't far out.
