Hi, Any one else out there working on there own throttle body conversion? I have only just got my VX and already planning next winters mods! I realise that due to the digital throttle arangement, TB converions is not as straight forward as you would think. To get around this I am planing to build my own digital drive for standard TB's as a way around this problem, this will allow me to keep the standard ECU. On this point does anyone have a non working (read free / scrap) VX throttle body kicking around? It will save me having to disect my TB! Failing this aproach it means adding a throttle cabe Mike.

Im fairly well into the research for a TB conversion. Im looking at using Ford Zetec Roller barrel TB's as they are a very similar shape and spacing to the Z22se. Mate that to a 20-25mm thick lump of ally for a "manifold" youve got the intake sorted (exact details arent sorted yet) as for the throttle control. I thought about getting a Kseries S2 pedal box as this gives you the cable, and also lets you have non servo assited brakes that would be a PITA to sort the vaccum for the TB's imho.

It's simple to create a vacuum take off, just drill and tap a hole for each inlet and 'T' them together - job done.

the standard ecu will not work very well with throttle bodies and nobody has been able to fully remap it yet :(

the only option is a 'standalone' ecu and new wiring loom and a throttle cable :)

you are not alone in wanting a cheap throttle bodies conversion :grouphug:

the only issue is mapping the new ecu, other than that the conversion is reasonably straight forward :D

I'd be inclined to agree with vocky and slindborg. Junk the OEM ECU + ETB control! The ETB is probably utilised (and controlled) by the ECU's software to at least assist in calculating engine load and therefore has a bearing on the adjustment of ignition and fuel maps (advance ETB control will also work out ETB positioning), meaning you could have no real control of engine power outputs.

Reasons why I'm setting up an Emerald!

even where i work (we make ETB's) said not to bother making it work on a normal throttle spindal as its too safety critical etc... stuck at WTO gen lol. mapping is easy (well ok easy if you know how lol) I dont like taping induhvidual intake runners like the jenveys do for the XE, so id be more than happy to fit non servo brakes (does away nicely with the ABS module then too :oD (yes i know road speed would be gone but not if you keep the abs ecu in there

Mike.

You lost me at the point of "throttle body conversion"

No help from me then but.... your post looked very technical n that.

Bravo!

:P :drink:

Well I knew it was not simple and the replys have conviced me even more. The reasoning to using the current ECU is that it would be far simpler to convert, dont a lot of other system run through? I was not aware that no one had a full map of the standard ECU what was TMS going to do with there conversion? thanks Mike

Nobody seems to have fully cracked the Delco ECU used from the factory, but even if they did then using it with individual throttle bodies will be a struggle as it's working on a MAP based engine strategy which translates really poorly to ITB's. (vacuum 'signal' from ITB's is very distorted because of the direct pressure pulses in each intake)

For throttebodies you need to run alpha-N (throttle-position) input combined with a temperature and barometric sensor (otherwise your air-fuel ratio goes to sh*t when you drive in the mountains), or use a more 'factory' style setup with an air-mass meter system attached to the main intake to the ITB's.

TMS are supposedly using Alpha-Weber ECU for their conversion:

Bye, Arno.

Whats to stop us buying say an XE or Zetec gold kit and adapting to fit ?

not a lot :P

might be cheaper to buy a new emerald ecu and some used throttle bodies :tumble:

Have you spoken with Jenvey? If you have a spare intake gasket might be worth passing it on to them to see if they can provide a manifold. The mani used will play a big part in determining the performance you get from the iTB's.

thats the issue, the inlet doesnt have a gasket - rather a series of rubber o rings, i guess some tracing paper is in order they would probably be direct to head anyway, considering space limitations

Regal should be able to supply you with a intake gasket (the dbilas intake manifold they fit uses of a gasket).

I reckon you will need some class of a manifold after the iTB's..... else you'll have a pretty bad air+fuel mixture going into the cylinder head  If your planning to bolt the iTB's direct to head and use the standard injectors you won't be getting anywhere near the best performance from the iTB's

he means their DTH kit that is allegedly designed to do the job ok... As said ive been looking and the Zetec manifolds look about the closest match so would only need a small spacer plate made to adapt between the Z22 head and Zetec manifold (or direct roller barrels like im looking at, saves even more space then for trumpets)

making an adaptor plate is easy, here's one I prepared earlier
