My insurance is due by the end of the month and I've had my quotes for my VXT and little run around. All in all, I'm fairly happy with the quote but come September my car needs its 4th service which I assume is Cam belt change (29k miles on the clock). Rather than taking it to the normal dealer, I was thinking of TMS and whilst I was there I was thinking of getting a stage1 done. The insurance increase for 10% BHP increase is £50 but 11-25% is £225 increase in my premium. My question is, can I assume that a stage 1 will only increase upto 10%? Can I assume, when stating to the insurance companies an ECU remap, you need to provide evidence of the increase ? It would be very annoying if the increase took me a couple of percent into the 2nd insurance braket, or would TMS be able to keep this to only 10% ? I'll email TMS anyway, but I was hoping someone has experienced this before (I've never modded any car I've had)

Not sure of the best way forward but when I insured my Stage2 I gave the insurance company the very top end of the projected BHP figure ie. 250bhp. I would cover yourself and over estimate the bhp because the insurance companies will only be interested in 'proof' in the Event of a serious claim? IMHO ps. brilliant topic title :P

Well I would say that from an insurance point of view, you are better off getting a stage 2; reasoning as follows: - Standard VXT - 200bhp - Full Milltek (for example) exhaust adds up to 18bhp, so car is now 218bhp. To cover this with insurance you quote 'Non standard exhaust / manifold. (they don't differentiate between a halfords bolt on loud pipe for a Saxo and a full sports exhaust that adds power) - Remap + 10% takes car's 'insured' power to 218 *1.1 = 240bhp. I have a dyno chart to prove my car came out at 239bhp after Stage 2, and thus under the insured power value, so if any future debate was to occur I have the proof that my car was tested at 239bhp (and any increase that may occur as the ECU learns the map is something I know nothing about ;) ) In summary, IMO to insure a Stage 2 you should to quote a non standard exhaust / manifold and engine remap +10%, which came out as £55 more for me. As with you, a remap +20% was something silly, and as laid out above, unnecessary as you are within the insurance company's guidelines with +10% declared.
