Stand at the passenger side of the car and look into the engine bay. Look at the nearest side of the block and go downward towards the gearbox. It's a bit tight but you should be able to see it. The bleed nipple looks exactly like the brake ones but coming of a 45 degree pipe from the gearbox.

Thanks both - that's brilliant and the pdf now downloaded and filed :) Too foul to go outside and look for myself but can I assume you need to take the tray off and do it from underneath? Also the pdf says only DOT4. I was planning on 5.1 (prob ATE) - any issues here? And while I'm on it ... will 1.5 litres be enough for a total fluid change? Cheers!

Nah, you can do it with the tray on, as long as you have a long enough peice of hose. 1.5 should do it but I'd get 2 litres just to make sure. Last thing you want is to suck a load of air in the system because you run out. I stuck with dot4 but I used Castrol Super dot4. You won't get any extra benefit from dot 5.1 unless you upgrade your full brake solution (Calipers, Bigger discs, braided lines etc). Plus dot 5.1 needs changing more often.

annual fluid change is "wise" anyway.... Ive got ATE superblue in mine, will drop it mid summer as it will be a year old then (although I thought ATE was Dot 4 not 5.1)

Oops - so it is, lol. That's the stuff anyway! So it all looks do-able by little old me then. Thanks for the help. I'll get the 1144's on order :)

ATE comes in 1 litre cans as well so 2 litres it is!

Thanks very much :)

5.1 is hydroscopic so goes off more quickly. Here is a link to explain the science.

I did mine overzealously with 1L (and had fluid to spare)

Cheers. I assume there is a decent shelf life for unopened tins? Camskill are £51 front and back for the pads and the ATE Blue is £11.99 a litre from JRT Automotive. I assume these are the best prices I'll find? One last thing then I'll let it rest I promise (;)). Front only or front & back for the 1144's? Intended use is not-that-fast road plus about 4 fast-as-I-can-but-with-plenty-of-rests track days a year. Lastly, slindborg, I'm also in Stortford! If it all goes really wrong, any chance I cold call you for help? Last resort and all that!

yeah I can lend a hand if you wish. Imho 1144's all round is a good setup for road use (just clean yer wheels regularly), Ive got an emergency set of 1144's in the loft if you get stuck. ATE for £11.99 WOW thats damn good! I paid £17 for mine and thought I had got a good deal lol. Think the tin I had was in the cupboard for at the very least a year. There should be a date stamped on the can.

Was thinking of changing the fluid in my car, but don't have a jack, i can see that you can access the bleed nipple on the front brakes easily enough without removing the wheel and have located the bleed nipple on the rear, but not sure i would be able to get a spanner on it (with the hose attached) anyone done it before?
