I'm going to have a chat with cambridge airport to see if they'll let me do it. Hopefully working for the company that owns it all will make them consider favourably

I'll share the cost with you if you like Silent. Cambs is not too far from me, and I'm sure they had some caterams doing this there once, about 2 years back.

Could be worth asking Plans, i think bigger numbers could be a problem though... I don't know much about these things, but i imagine public liability is one major issue. Blagging a couple of lads on for an hour or so would be no problem, but an organised day for a group is a different thing altogether IMO. May as well just do a airfield track day.

Looks great! How smooth is the runway though, as airfields are usually so bumpy they knock your teeth out when driving on them! Also any idea why your ECU went funny, is that from repeated spinning/ABS kicking in??? Since driving there have you had any problems with the geo? Sorry lots of questions, but very interested as would like to have a play around like you did and find the limits of the car.

Bliemy, I did some work over there a few years back but didn't know you could rent it by the hour. iirc they give you a radio and just let you know when a plane wants to land? Might go an have a play, bored of MK roundabouts. :groupjump:

Nice one rsg, that place sounds good. I'm keen to try this out soon. One problem with airfields can be the amount of stones on them, which can mean stone chipping on paintwork. How did you find it in that respect? Thanks

The 'run off' area was quite gravelly, with a few large stones ready to eat front number plates, but the actual runway was fine, no stones at all

Good news about the lack of stones...I'm talking to friend now about paying that airfield a visit. Thanks for posting the details :)

The ECU error may have been caused by the exhaust fumes entering the air intake when heading backwards down the airfield after a spin. Caused me to stall with foot firmly on the clutch during a car limits day!

I went to a meeting at Turweston last month. The office window overlooked the airfield. It was hard trying to concentrate whilst there was a rally-prepared mini blasting around outside!

Turweston no longer do this - anyone know of any other airfields that might?

Don't know of any freebies. When I enquired in 2006, Bruntingthorpe was available as follows but no idea if it still is (but would be interested):

The charge for 'shared' use is £50.00 per vehicle per hour (min 2 hrs) or £150.00 per 1/2 day (4 hrs) or £250.00 per 8 hr day (all + vat).
Please note that all vehicles using the test track must be silenced to road-legal standard (less than 98 dba at the exhaust). Noisy vehicles will be stopped immediately!

chinky chinky
PS Re "shared use" I did a couple of driver training sessions there and there was only ever one other car on the circuit - well two on one occasion but that was filming the other one! I guess this can be verified first.

up here in jockland you can hire out Crail Raceway (Airfield) for next to bugger all. They have limited days, but pick a summer day after one of the thrash's or rally's and you can book the drift pan or track for about from 1600 til sun down. Did this last year with Lei's stock car. Took it up after the max power day and blasted round the drift pan/oval for hours until I broke it :D Initally they didnt want paid but came later asking for £25, couldnt really argue. thumbsup Scott.
